    deltree /y c:\windows\*.tmp
    deltree /y c:\windows\*.swp
    deltree /y c:\windows\cookies
    deltree /y c:\windows\history
    deltree /y c:\windows\temp
    deltree /y c:\windows\tempor~1
    echo All Done!

I am not going to give up. ;) Since you have tried to get Windows Installer to install and it still has failed to run, do you have a Windows 98 CD? If you do then maybe you can reinstalling Windows 98. I don't see any other alternative to fix your computer. :( Read this, How to Reinstall Windows 98.

    Good morning Evan Omo,
Heres a bit of background about me, see this computer was given to my wife by a girlfriend of hers. Her husband went to prison for three years for fooling around with an underage girl. She for some reason did not want him to have her dads computer. Thats who gave her the computer. I found out about this after we had had the computer for awhile. I didn't care because I have my own computer. One day I got paranoid and thought, boy I hope he wasn't looking at child **** or something with this computer, it might cause me some problems if theres something on here that shouldn't be and one day I have to take this computer in for repair. The computer did not come with a 98 cd, it was just on here. I tried to get it from her but her father has since died and she has no idea where it is. Being a man, I thought no problem, I drew my sword and yelled, I'll fix it! LOL So I took my xp cd and tried to put it on here and wipe away any traces of him and 98 only it did not work. Xp wouldn't go on here! Everytime I got viruses on my computer or couldn't fix it, I just reinstalled xp and that fixed it. So I just never used this computer. One day I went to fix my computer and reinstall xp, I deleted the partition but when I tried to get xp to go back on it said that my copy was invalid. I guess I broke the rules by trying to put my copy on another computer? So now like a ghost ship upon the ref, my computer sits there mocking my return! It seems I have been condeemed to walk the waste lands of 98se until someone breaks the curse and helps me fix my computer, which of course won't happen, or until I break down and and buy another copy of windows xp, but I can't because they don't make xp any more and I don't want vista, so I am doomed to be doomed! If only I had a 98se cd and a key code I might get this computer back on track, but I would push it out into the road and hope that it gets run over by a truck if only I had a xp cd! Anyway, thats just where I am! Thanks for listning, and thank you for trying to help, maybe we can work on something more simple next time. Thank you!

Based on what you told me, since you can't get Windows Installer to install and you don't have a Windows 98 CD then I honestly don't know what else to suggest. :( So I assume you tried downloading Windows Installer from the software patch link and you couldn't get it to install?

Regarding Windows XP you can't have more than 1 copy of Windows XP installed on a computer. You can't take a Windows XP CD thats already activated on one computer and try and install it and activate it on another. FWIW you can either try and borrow a Windows 98 CD from a friend or co worker and perform a repair of Windows 98, or you can go out and buy Windows XP fresh and install it on the 98 system (I doubt if a computer thats running Windows 98 now will be able to run Windows XP to be honest). Also just so you know Windows 98 is very out of date and is no longer supported by Microsoft. Could you tell me the system specs of the computer so I can determine if Windows XP will run on it thanks. Display System Information in Windows 98.

Yes, all those index.dat files are, as they are located in the folders those commands delete.
A cleanup of those folders will remove garbage that collects that windows doesn't delete. The index.dat files if left alone will increase in size filling up with old data.

Ok, but give me a little bit, my wife is about to leave for my sons house for the weeked. Then I'll just save it as a file and send it to you in a private message. But I already know it won't go on, plus another person has told me the same thing, but maybe you might find some problems or issues that I could fix to make my computer run better. So hang on! :)

I have ccleaner already and like it. Also I was reading someone elses thread and they told them to down load ATF cleaner so I did to. Seemed like a good idea at the time. The odd thing about it though is everytime I use it I get two of them to open up on my desktop. I can use either one but only one of them at a time. Then when I'm through I click exit and they both go away. Strange huh? Why do I feel like this is not normal? LOL

    Hello buckshotdad1960,

Mark and Evan seemed to have stepped out for a while. Since you are here but have not yet responded to the requests of of your system specs using msinfo32.exe or system tools "system information" or have come back with an update on success or failure of downloading InstMsia.exe, please let me refresh or repeat those instructions:

First off let's see if we get over the hump of the mysteriously missing msiexec.exe (which should be located in *:\windows\system folder)
As Evan suggested download InstMsia.exe from here:

    http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/wininstall.html

    or more directly

    http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/winstalldownload.html

^The above url is a direct link to download. Give it a few seconds and the save prompt box will open.

NOTE*If using IE watch for the security bar popup, you may need to allow the download, if using Firefox just use the save option.

Once downloaded you can give the install a shot by clicking on it but if that fails you may need to follow these steps:

    Step 1
    Download the InstMsiA.exe
Save the file to the Windows desktop. Do not double-click it at this time.

Assuming these files are located in c:\windows\system. You may need to do a file search for them prior to following the next step. If they are there, proceed to STEP2 below.

STEP 2(Rename the old Microsoft Windows Installer files)
    Click Start > Shut down.

Choose Restart in MS-DOS mode, and then click OK.

At the DOS prompt, type the following, and then press Enter after each line.

    cd \windows\system
    ren msi.dll msi.old
    ren msihnd.dll msihnd.old
    ren msiexec.exe msiexec.old
    exit

    Restart the computer.

STEP 3 Reinstall the Microsoft Windows Installer
    On the desktop, double-click InstMsia.exe.
Follow the prompts to complete the installation.
    Restart the computer.

    ----------------------------------------------------------
Copy and paste system specs as requested using
    sysem information

    ------------------------------------------------------------
    Whoops,

I guess I've taken to long typing this out and you've since disappeared also. Must be due to late hour. Bedtime for most folks! ;)

As long as I'm here, again, I am also going to suggest a long shot as follows:

While doing a file search for msiexec.exe you may wish to keep an eye out for a backup of this in C:\WINDOWS\Helpdesk\SFC. It's been years since I've even set eyes on win98, but I vaguely recall sfc keeping backups of files it may have replaced, at one time or another in this default location. If you have set the option for and allowed such backups and have ever replaced msiexec.exe a backup may be stored there. Additionally these may be hidden files so if you haven't adjusted your folder view settings to allow such, you may need to do so. I said it was going to be a long shot.....:)

Bedtime sounds like a good idea and that's where I'm headed. Your bound to catch this in the morning. I hope it helps.

Hello goddez1, its 5:53 here in the morning and I'm bright eyed and busy tailed! I retired early last night, the rest did me good. markp62 has sent me an email that will give me plenty to do today. I'm no super geek, I'm just trying to fake my way through this and hoping no one finds out I'm dumber than rocks! LOL Being here on this board is kind of like hanging around a bunch of tough bikers when all you own is a mop head! You wanna do alot of tough talking and hope they don't find out! LOL

As far as the msinfo32.exe goes, I did that but for some reason I am having a problem pasting it in a private message to Evan omo. I didn't know if I should just post that kind of info on the board or not for just every one to see. It might come back to haunt me? I've been paranoid every since one night I called peoplepc and talked to a guy named mike. Of course that wasn't his real name, he's from India! Normally these people are straight to the point and very efficient in solving your problem. This guy on the other hand was very talkative. Looking back I find the whole thing suspicious now. He said it would take a few minutes for my computer information to come up on his screen. So we started talking about nothing then moved on to politics and everything else for about 45 minutes. Every now and then I would ask him why it was taking so long and he would say its almost done then start talking again. Then suddenly we were disconnected. I have always wondered what that was all about! Strange huh? I will work on posting Evan omo that info again today!

I already have Instmsia.exe downloaded to my desk top. I need to know how to extract that file from my installation media so my computer can find it. (what ever that means) I'll try the renaming the file thing and see if that helps. Thank you for that information. I feel like I'm in collage with brain over load! What seems to be child's play to you guys for me is like major brain surgery! LOL I flunked rocket science 101 back in school! LOL

As far as your long shot goes I'm going to sand bag that one for now until I finish what markp62 has for me to do. If that don't help I'll come back to your Idea! I hope your lost in pleasant dreams right now and thank you very much for your impute! Until next time, Good night!

The quickest way to extract drivers from a self installing executable file, is to use a 3rd-party zip program such as Winzip, Winrar or 7Zip.

You may be able to right click on this and from content menu choose extract *** and make sure to assign a folder for the extraction (name of choice)
    or
Just open the zip program, and go to File>Open or File>OpenArchive and select or browse to the self-installing executable. You may need to change Files of Type to include self extracting executable. Just remember to make sure these are extracting to folder you've made for it.

7zip is freeware so I suggest this first
    http://www.7-zip.org/

Current versions of winzip and winrar are no longer freeware and if trialware is offered beware: "they will stop functioning after trial date" until paid for or uninstalled.

Older versions of these will however continue to function but nag. This is a copyright violation. Try 7zip first.

Got to ask why you are choosing to extract files instead of just double clicking on the installer? If you are planning on a copy and replace (overwrite) I am not sure this is advisable. Don't know if files are self registering. As I remember win98x always seemed to be subject to versionitis or malfunction due to mismatched file version of co-dependent files.

Speaking of strange phone calls (three years ago during pledge week at the local collage) I got a call from a girl with the most beautiful voice I have ever heard! I said, hello and she said, I’m a perv "“ I’m a perv "“ I’m a perv and then she hung up! I was shocked! But I couldn’t believe my luck! It was a real live perverted girl! I tried to call her back but without caller ID I keep getting the wrong number! LOL People started calling me the pervert! LOL Now every year during pledge week I sit by the phone! LOL Oh well what can you do? Life’s tough! LOL

Anyway, enough about me, now here’s some more!

    Markp62,
I think I have found one more root to my problems. I downloaded your attachment and tried to open it. A box popped up that said,

Are you sure you want to add the information in c:\windows\tempor~1\content.IE5\BQAROUQ7\instal~1.zip to the registry?

I said yes! Next a box popped up that said, cannot import c:\windows\tempor~1\content.IE5\BQAROUQ7\instal~1.zip
The file is not a registry script. You can only import registry files.

I’m sure this is set to the wrong program to open this file! Can you give me a guide line as to know how to open a file in its proper program, and how to change it if it’s not set to be opened by its proper program?

I got your PM. I will give you my e-mail so you can just e-mail me the file. I think that will be the easiest way. You can't post attachments on the BBS unless your a contributing member just so you know.

Ann you are doing a great job helping out BTW. ;)

    ????
    startbutton>all programs>7zip>7 zip file manager

Did you right click on the InstMsia.exe and see if you have already allowed 7zip to include its self "? If so, on a rightclick of InstMsia.exe you will have an option to "extract files" or something similar.

*If not try opening 7zip as instructed above
*and once InstMsia.exe is found, selected and highlighted
*Click on the extract icon (in my version it is found on the menubar and is a blue minus sign).

If you do not have 7zip context menu items integrated......

To enable shelled context menu options, if you wish to do so:
    *try clicking tools>options>plugins tab>options button
*Pick and choose which options you'd like to see when a rightclick on an compressed file is done. Choose all if desired. At minimum you may wish to add all the "extract ****" options. I have three.

    -----------------------------
    Option to open: startbutton>run line>type 7zfm.exe

From e-mail these are buckshotdad1960's system specs for the Windows 98 system.

    Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.2222 A
    Clean install using Full OEM CD /T:C:\WININST0.400 /SrcDir=D:\WIN98 /IZ /IS /IQ /IT /II /NR /II /C /U:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    IE 5 6.0.2800.1106
    Uptime: 0:00:47:43
    Normal mode
    On "C0N3U6" as " "
    GenuineIntel Intel(r) Celeron(tm) Processor
    319MB RAM
    65% system resources free
Windows-managed swap file on drive C (36274MB free)
    Available space on drive C: 36270MB of 38152MB (FAT32)

Based on those specs I would say that Windows XP would run on the computer but chances are that the XP would run a lot slower on the computer than 98. For now we can try and get the Windows Installer problem figured out and solved before we move on with other options.

Yes, ???? = moron! I’m sorry I’m not very smart! I was born dumb! Through regressive therapy in the delivery room I remember the doctor spanking me! I didn’t cry, I just remember thinking, why is this giant beating me! LOL I remember him saying, man, this baby is dumb! Then he slapped my mother! LOL So please try and remember that when you’re trying to explain something simple that’s really complicated to me like it ain’t no thang! LOL

Right clicking on instmsia.exe and double clicking it says the same thing: The specified service already exists.

On my tools button I have no option for tools>options>plugins tab>options button.
So I deleted 7zip and downloaded the one you recommended.

I can right click on it and it opens up with several things that I can do. One is extract files! Do you want me to click this? :)

    Hi again,

Before manually extracting these why don't we give this install option a shot. Even though steps were given to you previously I'll add them here.
