Some time ago I decided that I didn't want Nero so I uninstalled it. I then found that the CD Actions list still contained several Nero options. Having studied my XP references it seemd I could remove these via a Registry edit which I did (stupidly without a backup - I know, I know!). However, I now have a CD options list in Properties>Autoplay in which the first two items are some strange hieroglyphics and "using <need provider> ". Also, in the "autoplay" tab if I select the option list for "mixed content" the "apply" button is always available and selecting "always prompt for an action" and then clicking "apply" makes no difference - no options list appears if I insert a data CD.

How can I get rid of these two odd entries, and what do I need to do to cause the options list to appear for a data CD?

TweakUI also has some control and editing ability with respect to removable drives and optical drives.

Open TweakUI and go to My Computer > Auto Play > Handlers and you'll see the possibilities. Check the other options there too.

Thanks for your replies PeteC and surferdude2. I have already tried the MS Repair to no effect, and the options in TweakUI don't cover the problem - incidentally, TweakUI displays the full possible options for the CD drive BUT this does not include the two strange options at the head of the list which appears under the CD Properties>Autoplay tab.
    Any further possibilities?

Perhaps reinstall Nero and see if they go away. Then try the uninstall again from Safe mode this time.

You might eventually have to use a context menu editor to get it cleaned.

I like ShellExView for that purpose.

    In addition to suferdude2's suggestion

Google search for a "Nero clean tool" related to your version of Nero. Nero does have these available for cleanly uninstalling a stubborn or problematic installation.

gooogle hits for Nero clean tool

Problem solved!! My thanks to all, particularly surferdude2. In looking at surferdude's reference to Shellexview (which I did not think would do the job because it related only to context handlers, not autoplay options) I came across another site ('Ramesh's site' - a bit like BBS) on which Tip 304 referred to a freeware 'autoplay handler cleaning' program CleanHandlers which I downloaded. It is a small program which works wonders! It will scan to detect incorrect handlers and it found about 15 in my system including all the Nero ones I thought I had removed, so I told it to clean up and everything is now exactly as it should be!!

'Ramesh's Site' is worth a look, and it's at http:\\windowsxp.mvps.org.

That's good to hear Tony! Thanks for posting back so others can share and be helped.

That's a good resource you found, I've used it many times.

The fix was HERE I presume.

    All the best,

    Dude

:D Thanks Dude. Yes, you're right, that was where I found it. It is such a good resource it should be widely known - hope it helps someone else as well as me.

And that's not all - WindowsBBS is also a fantastic resource. My thanks to all who study the problem threads and offer solutions - I have been helped many times with what appeared to be fairly insoluble difficulties.
