This forum was recommended to me after I sought assistance at the Spybot S&D's malware forums. (Link to that thread below).

What my helper found was that I was infected with Virut, a File Infector. He said it infected all .exe files on my computer, and he recommended a complete reformat and a clean install of Windows. He said specifically that a system repair would not be good enough to fight this infection.

What I am here for is assistance with saving my files (pictures, documents, movies, music, anything that can be saved) in a safe manner that won't risk reinfecting my computer when I move them back. It looks like my CD burner is infected. I have Western Digital's "My Little Black Book" for off-computer storage, but I am not sure if the executables on that drive would get infected if I linked it with this computer. I also need help with how exactly to go about a complete reformat and clean install of Windows.

Of course, I'll try any tools and provide any additional logs you need while I'm getting help on this forum.

Here is a link to the previous thread where I recieved help, containing logs from all fixes I ran:

    http://forums.spybot.info/showthread.php?t=46483

    Tools We Used:

    1. HijackThis (to create a log and fix some items)
    2. DelDomains.inf
    3. ComboFix
    4. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    5. Kaspersky Scan

And as instructed in the "Before You Post" log, here is the DDS and Attach logfiles from the DDS program.

Thank you for any help you can provide!

    Hi
Sorry to hear you have Virut, and a clean install is really your only option.
    Clean install of Windows

Now for saving your files, There is really no way to know if they are infected, I would save everything into a new folder on what ever you are going to use as storage when you transfer them. Be it a flash Drive or what ever.

Make sure your AutoRun is disabled and do a number of different on line virus scans on the folder to see if anything in it is infected before moving them to the hard drive after your clean install.

    Hope this helps.

Are there any filetypes besides the .exe files that I should consider definitely infected (and not bother with them)?

What online scans you would recommend? Would I just hook up my off-computer storage to the USB as usual and then use a Browse option to locate the storage drive? Should I make sure autorun is still disabled before attaching the drive to the clean computer?

    Thank you for your help!

    Hi
First I want to say that this is by no means fool proof. Virut is a nasty virus and this is taking a chance that any files you save won't be infected. (This is "At your own risk ")

Virut Attempts to infect any accessed .exe or .scr files by appending itself to the executable, W32/Virut.n also infects HTML Files

    Most definitely.
I would make a folder on the infected machine and name it. Then I would move all files that you wish to save to that folder.
Then I would try to scan that folder while it is still on the infected machine, Then transfer the folder to your storage device.

Do the clean install, Make sure you install your Anti-Virus program and update it.

Then hook your storage device to the machine, Run scans on the folder while on your storage device.

Then transfer the folder and scan it again with your Anti virus program.

Another quick question. I looked up how to disable autorun, since I wasn't entirely sure what would be the best way to ensure it doesn't try to run anyways, and I found a lot of different fixes. Most of them involved editing the registry so that there would be no way to bypass it.

The storage I am going to be transferring files to connects through USB. How would you recommend I disable the autorun?

    Thanks!

Hopefully I'm not out of line posting this, being as it is my first post here, but may I also suggest that once you've backed up your files to the single folder as Geri suggests, that you also scan it with AVG's Virut removal tool.

You can download it here: http://www.avg.com/virus-removal.ndi-67762

I'm in the clean-up stages with this virus myself and it's been a bear. This tool was able to identify and remove the remaining 74 infected files that came along with my backup to external drive. Reinfected myself twice before I (Lord willing) am finally free of it.

    Best of luck.

    Hi Cool Breeze
Thanks for the info, But so far I have yet to see the tool work to where a person still did not have to reformat.

To turn off Aoto Run in XP Pro.

    1. Windows XP Pro users: Click Start and then click Run. Type gpedit.msc and click OK. The Group Policy window will open.

    2. In the left pane, double-click Administrative Templates. In the right pane, double-click System, scroll down the list and double-click Turn Off Autoplay.

    3. In the Turn Off Autoplay Properties window, select Enabled.

    4. From the dropdown next to Turn Off Autoplay on, select All drives and then click OK. Exit Group Policy by selecting File, then choosing Exit from the menu.

Gerri - I absolutely agree that this virus requires a clean format and reinstall.

I myself have gone through much of the process you've defined here over the last few days, but had reinfected my tower after my first clean format and reinstall. The virut removal tool identified and allowed me to delete the infected files from my external (nearly 1TB worth) backup and after another clean format and reinstall, I'm just about back to speed. I was only suggesting the tool worked for me and that I think it would be a good idea to run it on Leopold's file backup both before he copies it to his external drive or flash, and again after his clean format before copying the files back into the new Windows installation.

This virus is indeed a nasty and it took me a great deal of time to recover from it. This thread was the only one I found identifying the exact same file names as were found in my case so I wanted to put in my 2 cents. Hopefully my input has been helpful.

    Regards,

    Breeze
