computer is up and working now, but had a problem rebooting. After I ran a disc check, a screen came up and on the bottom it said

    Primary slave hard disc error
    Press F1 to resume

then a DOS type screen came up and when I went to exit it brought me back to that screen again that said slave hard disc error.

I then powered down the computer and turned back on and seems to be fine now. Do I have a problem?

    It depends ;)

How many hard drives do you have?

If one check the jumper settings, It could be set as Master with slave present.

If two download the relevant tool (link below) and run full diagnostics on your slave drive.

See this post from PeteC for diagnostic software.

There's 2, (one is a slave). Just pick any of those links?

Pick the one that matches the manufacturer of your slave drive.

Download SIW, you'll find HD information from that.

    EDIT: Look under Hardware/Storage Devices

It says manufacturer unknown, model is quantum fireball, so I assume it's a quantum. So is the correct software seatools for windows?

    Is M: a memory stick/removable drive?

Download the file to you master drive. Do not attempt to write to the slave drive until we can verify its status.

    Ok,

    from the top,

Download and install seatools to your master drive, do not use your slave drive.

Can you tell me what drive letters are what, I'm not a mind reader ;)

M and N are the slave drive. (I think it was partitioned). C is the master drive. I did download seatools to the desktop. Should I delete the installer and download it directly to the C drive?

Better safe than sorry, yes only use the C drive for now. Download the installer to C:\ and install to the C drive. Once installed run the tool to examine your M/N (slave) drive.

I got that same error message as before.

there was window that popped up that said this program requires .NET
framework 2.0 or greater. Then it said the installation ended prematurely because on an error.

I downloaded the installer directly to the C drive

Ok, try seatools for DOS, download on another system if possible, read the tutorial and make boot disks for the problem system.

Ok, having a little problem. Am I supposed to save the disc image and burn it to a CD? I don't know if it's the writer or the burning software (nero), but I'm not able to complete the burn process. Can the image just be dragged and dropped to the CD?

What error are you getting when burning the image?

Are you using another system as I suggested earlier?

Drag and drop won't work, have you tried other software eg CDBurnerXP

I was able to create the floppy disc. I don't have another system to use. It's a little complicated. I reboot the system from the floppy? Which test do I run?

    These include:
    - S -- SHORT Test
    - L -- LONG Test
    - C -- Set Capacity
    - A -- Acoustic
    - Z -- Erase Drive
    - H -- Help

H would be a good place to start ;)

L -- Long test, stay away from Z.
