On startup, a message box appears : "Direct CD will cause windows to become unstable. Windows has prevented this driver from being loaded. For more info, click here for details ".
Clicking sends me to the Roxio website, where numerous programs are listed to buy, upgrade, or download... BUT nothing there seems to be called Direct CD. Nor can I find any mention of this in the Add/Remove program area or any searches.
After the box informs me that no drivers were loaded, everything works fine. ( It's been doing this for months).
But it's irritating. Can I get rid of the message OR fix the drivers ?

Have you previously removed a Roxio (Adaptec) program? If so, have a look at these two registry keys, after creating a system restore point:

    1. Go to Start > Run, type regedit, press Enter and navigate to registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. In the right pane look for DirectCD or similar wording and if it’s there, right-click it and select Delete.

    2. Also, look in this key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Thanks, BurrWalnut for the excellent response. That was indeed good advice and I rechecked in the 2 areas you recommended, just to be sure I hadn't missed it before. The registry is HUGE and a needle in a haystack can be easily overlooked.
But, alas, no hits. I've searched fruitlessly for this Direct CD item. I run Registryfix 7.1, a very handy app. It has not found any probs related to this either.
As the old saw goes : "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." I suppose I'll leave well enough alone and just grit my teeth and mumble bad words at boot up. One click & the box disappears, so... what the heck? It could be much worse.
Again Thanks very much for the input. If you have any other suggestions, please pass them on. A good mystery is always fun to solve. :)

    Device Manager->View->Hidden Device.

Now search for Direct CD driver & uninstall it. Most probably Listed in Non Plug and Play Drivers.

Look in msconfig - Startup tab - if present disable it, or use Autoruns which is much more informative.

    TY rsinfo and PeteC.
Pete, the autoruns app is phenomenal... super. The interesting part is that not only is there no autorun for Direct CD, there is absolutely no startup for anything from Roxio . This thing does not exist. Not in the registry, not on the harddrive, nowhere. Yet Windows tells me everytime it starts that loading this driver will cause probs. Grrrrr.
And rsinfo, ty for the link. I already bought and use a registered version of Registryfix 7.1, it too is a good registry fixer. Buying another is not an option.
But if I had none, I would use your recommendation. (Though I doubt if it would give a different result from mine ).
And I only wish this were solvable by Add/Remove, or msconfig/startup tab.. If only, LOL

So, the plot thickens, eh ? An invisible, non-existent entity appears at startup. Sneaky li'l devil, isn't it ?

P.S. PeteC... the link you provided gave me some relief... It appears this Roxio program is a compatibility issue with Windows SP 2, the same OS I'm having trouble with. It's not just MY problem ( sigh of relief).

P.P.S. My main PC is a Vista 32 bit , runs well. The problem child is the XP Pro I passed down to my wife. But I still maintain both.

Anything on the computer relating to Adaptec UDF Reader or Adaptec DirectCD?

I ran a search on Drive C for key word "adaptec" , including hidden files. No results found.

Well, it remains a mystery then ....

A Google search threw up the possibility I mentioned. The reference to DirectCD may possibly be in a hidden and inaccessible section of the registry.

I gave you the two normal ‘run’ keys (as per msconfig) above, but as DirectCD wasn’t in either, the only other registry keys that can possibly contain a startup program are:

    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\UserInit (userinit.exe,{the comma must be present})
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell (explorer.exe only)

Look in the right pane for the program. If it’s there I suspect you have caught something.

EDIT. I should have said that there are other keys that could contain start up programs but they are of the RunOnce variety.

Some mysteries in the deep fathoms of cyberspace are just not meant for mortals to delve into.... rofl... I will close this thread with deepest appreciation for your time and insight.
Absent a re-format and reinstall of Windows ( shudder. eeeek ) this glitch is eternally embedded deeply in Windows.
    I will let it live.

I enjoyed the challenge and your great help.
