Explorer doesn"t recognize hardware

Do any of you gentlemen have an idea of whats going on here.
My computer classes didn't cover anything like this.

After installing AVAST the OS fails to recognize my 20 gig SLAVE HD, my CD, or my DVD.
The BIOS in Setup lists everything as it should.
Once Windows loads and I type in my password a message appears (TO FINISH SETTING UP YOUR HARDWARE YOU MUST RESTART)
I restart and the message appears again. So I cancel and I'm able to work with the 80 gig C:\ drive but the DEVICE MANAGER lists the CD, DVD, and Both GENERIC IDE DISKs with red X's and both PRIMARY and SECONDARY IDE Controllers with yellow examination's. When checking DRIVERS and RESOURCES everything is OK with no conflicts. The PERFORMANCE TAG reveals the 80gig DRIVE C:\ is using the MS-DOS compatibility mode file system.Whatever that is!
EXPLORER lists the FLOPPY and C:\ DRIVE but no SLAVE HD, CD, or DVD.
Both 80 gig MASTER and 20gig SLAVE HDs run WIN98se
Booting to the 20gig SLAVE results in EXPLORER listing everything OK except the 80gig MASTER is listed twice as both D:\ and E:\ DRIVES still using the MS Compatibility mode I've tried every configuration of ribbon cable including two MASTERS on separate cables with the same result.
I've removed AVAST from START-UP so I don't think it is the problem. I also replaced the C-MOS battery with no change.
So now I think that some type of DRIVER must be corrupted on the 80gig MASTER but have no idea what to look for. If I did could I not simply copy and paste the good DRIVER from the 20gig SLAVE to overwrite the corrupted DRIVER on the 80gig MASTER?

Or shut down computer, but instead of letting it shut down, select to Restart in Dos Mode. Type in this command, "scanreg /restore ", and press Enter. Select a registry dated before this happened using the arrow keys and press Enter.

I downloaded the Western Digital Diagnostics as you advised, ran it and it reported everything in excellent condition.

I checked the SUPPORT.MICROSOFT link and discovered that my IDE Driver is one that may cause this problem.

Intel 82371 AB/EB Pci Bus Master IDE Controller

So now I have no idea what to do!!

At this point, any advice will be much appreciated.

Do these steps to see if the driver will re-initialize itself.

Click Start, click Run, type "regedit" in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
In the left pane of Regedit, locate and click the following registry key (looks like a folder) :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\IOS

Then look in the right pane, right-click the NOIDE entry, and then click Delete. Quit Registry Editor.

And then reboot. The presence of the above thing that you are deleting causes windows to go into compatibility mode.

This issue can be a bear to track down and fix, lack of a NOIDE may indicate a corrupted driver.
Here is a trouble shooting page that shows how to get two different logs.

Look in the windows folder for a file name 'ios.log' the first lines may indicate what is happening.
The page describes Esdi_506.pdr as a 32 bit protected mode driver, try copying this file over, located in C:\Windows\System\Iosubsys.
The webpage describes how to create a bootlog, however the easier method is to Go to Start\Run type in 'msconfig' and press Enter. Click on the Advanced tab, and put a checkmark in 'Enable Startup Menu' then click on Ok. Then reboot, use the arrow keys to select the logged option in the Startup Menu (white text on black screen).
The Bootlog.Txt file is created in C:\ or the root of the drive, please post any lines that say "Init Failure" or "Load Failure ".
