    Warm winter greetings,

Here's a snag I've run into, and since some of you have already been there, I'll ask your help.

The problem is, some pictures on websites comes in loud and clear with an X and no picture.

I've looked around on http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;EN-US;Q283807 --- but nothing works whatsoever.

Therefore, I'm hoping someone on here has the fix. I'm using Vista Home Premium with IE 8.

Hi LumberGumRubber. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Since you are using IE8 some websites aren't fully ready for it yet. Have you tried running IE8 in compatility mode so it renders websites like IE7? Do the images show up now?

Try this. Open IE and click Tools< Internet Options< Advanced tab. Under Multimedia make sure all the checkboxes are checked. When done click apply and ok. Restart Internet Explorer.

See if those options work.

Thank you Evan Omo for the reply & effort. You must be closer to the truth than not regarding sites not being ready for IE8. It's not all sites that do the X thing, only running into a couple lately, one being --- http://www.ynetnews.com/home/0,7340,L-3083,00.html

After following your instructions, that didn't the trick either, so one will have to wait and see. Obviously, this X problem isn't new, as one sees it posted here and there regarding IE6 & 7.

I hit the "display all websites in compatibility view" but don't see anyway to reverse that. Have you noticed this before and is there indeed a way to reverse it back to where it was?

If you've something else up your sleeve Evan, fire it over this way. Appreciate your suggestions. Thanks!

Back to the subject at hand, would you have any idea yourself as to why IE8 has an X where pictures should be? Also, I noticed this morning, CNN videos will not play.

I get the following message "This CNN.com feature is optimized for Adobe Flash Player version 9 or higher. "

I've installed the Adobe Flash Player, uninstalled it, reinstalled it, and I keep getting the same message.

I've done the following since I'm using Vista ...

    -------------------------------
    Windows Vista installation failure
On some Windows Vista systems Flash Player may be installed, but will not display Flash content. In some cases updating to the latest Flash Player using the included utility can correct the User Account Control settings that cause this problem.

To run the utility, find your installed Flash folder:

    Right-click C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\FlashUtil9d.exe
The letter changes with each Flash version, so may be "FlashUtilb.exe" or "FlashUtile.exe"
    Select "Run as Administrator"
Follow the steps to complete the Flash Player installation
    Restart your computer
    ----------------------

This still doesn't do the trick. And I'm starting out on a reformatted Hard Drive. If you've any further ideas or should someone else have something up their sleeve to overcome this, I'll surely appreciate it.

Thanks for coming in on this Peter ......

I don't run Vista, but in general Flash must be uninstalled before installing a new version. Maybe this is what you have already done .....

How to uninstall the Adobe Flash Player plug-in and ActiveX control

    Then reinstall Flash .....

    Install Adobe Flash Player

Flash can be a problem - if you continue to have problems start a new thread in the Other Software forum and be sure to mention that you are running Vista.
    Tools > Compatability Mode Settings

If none of the solutions in the URL you posted work - you have tried them all? work I have really nothing to add. The dreaded red x has haunted IE for several versions and seems to be system specific rather than a base fault in IE.

You could try running IE with no-addons and see if an add-on is creating the problem. (right click IE desktop icon > start without add-ons or drill down through Programs > Accessories > System tools.

Thanks for the info PeteC. The strange thing about this is, before the reformat, IE8 worked ok. But all of a sudden (and without warning) this exciting snag came into play. I've done the whole 9 yards (or is that 10 yards) with the Adobe Flash player, but for some weird and wonderful reason, when I try and play a video, it will keep asking me to install the Adobe Flash Player. I just might uninstall IE 8 and go back to IE 7 and try that. I will throw it up on the other side of the forum where you instructed me to go.

Thanks again sir for the help. Much appreciated.

Here's what I did Peter --- I uninstalled IE8 and tore back to IE7. All works flawlessly. No beautiful red X's any more (at least up to this point) and videos work 110%. I won't be surprised if I reinstall IE8 again, it will work ok. When you figure this one out, let me know. Appreciate your feedback.

Remember that IE8 is not final yet - you are running Release Candidate 1 and, just maybe, the red x will be resolved in the RTM.

However Evan's comment re current web sites and IE8 compatibility - even in compatibility mode, is valid - there were similar problems in the early days of 7.

Understood. One now wonders when IE8 RTM will come along. Have you heard anything?

I heard not officially that Microsoft plans to release IE8 this month in March. I could be wrong though.

Yes, I think it was slated for Q1, but will be 'dribbled out' via Windows Updates over a period.

Keep an eye on threads here or in the News section at the bottom of our Home page.

    I doubt it.

I'm having no problems viewing the site with IE8, so it looks more like a problem with the users machine or Internet connection (ISP specific).

It could be there's a corrupt file in the users TIF folder.

You could be more correct than not, Arie. Why am I thinking I had no problem with IE8 when I first put it on?

    I backed off to IE7, but I have an idea if I reinstalled IE8 again, I'd have no problems. Probably! :-}

Pictures show as red x on some sites in IE8

I've found the problem with IE8 showing X's where some pictures were supposed to be and certain videos not playing.

Yesterday I found that on my wife's laptop, IE8 was working flawlessly. I knew then the problem had to be with "me" ...

I installed IE8 back over IE7 again, and the same red x's showed up and CNN video's not playing. THEN, I noticed up in the address bar, there it was ... an option showing itself quite clearly, asking me if I wanted to allow Adobe Reader to work on this site alone or all sites. Clicking that, and allowing Adobe to work on all sites fixed the problem.

I mean, I had uninstalled IE8, reinstalled it, took it off again and only yesterday did I see the problem RIGHT THERE BEFORE MY EYES!!!! Couldn't believe it, but anyway, problem is solved ... AND NOW YOU KNOW ... THE REST OF THE STORY!!!!

Thanks for the update and glad you found the solution :)

Somewhat puzzled as to how Adobe Reader is involved - there is little in AR's preferences to do with the Internet and what there is is to do with how pdf's are downloaded and displayed.

Maybe someone else will be able to shed a little light on this - I wonder if it has anything to do with Adobe Media Player, but don''t see how that relates to stills display.

PeteC, I've not a clue as to why Adobe came into the picture. I wish I had copied down exactly what was said, but that Adobe was there is not a second guess.

I remember being amazed that I hadn't saw that before. I remember clicking on the "allow Adobe" something ... and everything works 110%.

For curiosity sake, I will be interested to see why this happened.

I *think* when you install Adobe you have the option to let it 'grab' certain file associations. I think that's what's happened here.

Now I'm not sure, I refuse to use Adobe's 'bloatware' :D

Arie, what do you use in the place of Adobe Bloatware, Oh, pardon me, I meant to say Adobe Software? Would it be Silverlight and if a yea or nay, what is your judgment on this program?
