My dear wife recently bought me a Tiger Direct HP box with Vista installed and a "dummy" disk to convert it to XP-SP2.

I haven't fired it up as I wanted to read up a bit on things before jumping into the world of "modern compooting "(I'm a pretty dab hand at 98SE but I seem to have "stuck" there once I learned how to beat it into submission) and what I've been reading fills me with dread and apprehension.

So, I'd appreciate it if anyone could direct me to any sites/FAQs or the like which would cover the operation of installing XP over the VISTA OS.

I looked all over this forum in particular but didn;t find anything covering it.

    TIA

There's just one way: Reboot with the XP CD in the drive, Format & install XP: done!

Make sure you have all XP drivers for your system.

No idea what you mean by

    Should'a said "a DUMBDOWN" disk!

How's the weather in Malta? One of my very favourite places in the world to tie up!

It's winter! We're having some showers mixed with thunder & hail at times :(

I'm not sure what XP disk you have, it would need to be a full install or XP restore disk. Like I said: make sure that you have all the (XP) drivers for your hardware, and that you also have a Vista DVD to get back too if XP won't work.

Box comes with Vista Business installed and an [I assume] OEM install disk, a WIN XP-SP2 PRO [again, probably an OEM version] dvd and a recovery disk for the Vista as well as a "drivers disk ". (Whether that disk is for the XP or VISTA driver set is unknown at present.)

I did find one article by Greg Kizer from 2007 which covers most of the questions I had, but for those who find THIS thread via BBS search, I offer it with this caveat: it IS from 2007 and parts of it may be out-of-date.

Again, apologies, both for missing information AND for the weather! (Malta has WINTER?? Who knew???) Cheer up... Spring is coming! (Oh, but that means the (censored) tourists are coming, too.... there goes the traffic!)

Again, thanks for the help. Windows BBS continues to be my prime resource for problem-solving!
