Still wireless issues with Vista

My wife is not pleased with her new computer running Vista and I can't blame her.

The Beklin G USB wireless seems to be working better than the Netgear G USB adapter but there is still problems to sort out.

Today I logged onto the internet and got the "Page could not be displayed" error.

I moved the cursor over the wireless icon in the system tray and it said "Wireless networks in range ". If I click on my wireless network, it will be connect.

Here's what I have done today.

I unchecked everything under my parent's network so it would ignore it because I am only picking up 1 bar on theirs.

I then checked everything under my network in the properties. Such as "connect if within range ", etc.

Even though I have 3 and sometimes 4 bars, it seems the connection is dropping out for some reason. If I had 2 bars I could see this happening but with XP, it would always reconnect on it's own.

But instead of Vista reconnecting on it's own, we are having to manually reconnect. Despite under the properties it should be connecting regardless.

Any clue as to what's going on?

Whoever can come up with a definitive answer to this should win a prize. I am having similar problems with Vista. Searching on the internet reveals tens of thousands of posts about the same thing. I am sure that this is something MS should be working on, but it all seems quiet on their front.

I did a quick search on Google and so far what people are saying it has something to do with the 6to4 adapter under the Device manager and to disable it.

I may have found something. I wish I was home to see if this works but it sounds logical. Under power management, there is a setting that will turn off the USB ports when the computer goes into hibernation mode. I also noticed that the blue LED on to adapter is not lit. I don't know if that means it's not powered or it's just not connected to the network.

That would make sense if it's enabled. That is if the default setting for the USB ports in Vista is "enabled ". I've only had this computer for three days and I'm just learning the ins and outs of Vista.

The setting is buried in the system:

    Control panel
    Power options icon
    change plan settings
    change advanced power settings
    USB settings
    USB Selective suspend setting
    Disabled

I came across that too in my searches, however in my case I never let it hibernate/sleep. Set to full power at all times (sorry Earth).

I noticed this morning that the USB hibernation was disabled as a default so scratch that thought.

Today after I woke up the computer had been asleep for about 6 hours and I noticed the LED on the USB adapter was not lit.

After waking the computer up, the LED turns on and the wireless icon says I am not connected to the network but after 10 seconds it connects on it's own.

So I believe it is somehow related to the hibernation mode. I'm gonig to disable it except for the monitor and see what happens.

Just a quick update after some evaluation.

After turning off all the power management items except for the monitor and hard drive we have not had any problems with the wireless signal dropping out during hibernation.
