I with naivetè bought 4GB because the guide book of my laptop
said memory could be increased up to that value. (I have xp with
centrino due). If I load only one new card leaving the old 1GB one everyting works and system information tells me the truth. If I
load both the new cards the computer doesn't even start the boot.
On the BIOS the ram is quoted as 3.07GB. Is there a way to go around this problem? Thanks to anyone answering. Paolo from Rome.

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

Your problem is quite different from the thread on the 4 Gb limit - I have moved it to a new thread.

It would help to post the make and model no. of your laptop.

    4GB not prevent boot.

My computer is an ACER Aspire 5610.
The BIOS is declared as version 2.5
When I open the editing function of BIOS, on the second page I can see
Ram 3.07 GB written in blue (fixed value). You are not allowed to change it.
Thanks for your interest in the subject. Paolo de Magistris, Rome, Italy
