    Hi,

I have a nonn system disk that can be seen in My Computer, but when I explore it - it now shows the files as strange symbols and they are unreadable.

I have done error checking on the disk (Vista 64) and that said it has fixed some errors and others could not be fixed.

I really want to get a file (jpg) from this drive, so I tried some "free" software that searches the drive and lists some data, but I need to pay for the product to attempt to retrieve that data.

I usually am happy to support such software, if I can afford it, with a purchase, but I really am very unsure about this as there is no garuntee (far from it) that I will get the data back.

Can anyone recommend anything else I could try, or know of any free products that could help.

    Many thanks in advance

    Very popular:

Recuva (pronounced "recover ") is a freeware Windows utility to restore files that have been accidentally deleted from your computer. This includes files emptied from the Recycle bin as well as images and other files that have been deleted by user error from digital camera memory cards or MP3 players. It will even bring back files that have been deleted by bugs, crashes and viruses!

WOW - what a fabulous piece of software. It's really helped me out here.

Steve - many thanks for this help, I really appreciate it.

I always like to report back if I have had luck, or not, as it may be useful for other people to read about my experieces.

In this case - I highly recommend the software and also note that the files I wanted showed as "unrecoverable" - but it still managed to recoved them, so a tip there - try anyway.
