    Hello

What would be the general way of connecting to buildings of close proximity together. The reason I ask is the scenario below:-

There are two small buildings situated in close proximity to each other, separated only by a 10ft square concrete piece of ground. No other obstacles in between them.

The two buildings are the same company.

In building A there is a 1700 Cisco router and a D-link switch. Building A has one PC, this is connected via cable and is able to get Internet access.

In building B there is a 2003 server and a netgear switch. Building B has 3 laptops. In each of the 3 rooms in building B there is a wireless access point.

Building B has just lost its Internet connection.

I have only briefly visited the premises, but from what I have been told a guy in building B believes there are no cabinets or other equipment like a router in the building.

I find this hard to believe, as it likely means the two buildings (switches) are linked via ethernet cable. Also, the cisco router in building A is not wireless. From what I have seen there is no VPN connection between the buildings either.

Therefore, somewhere there must be a router and broadband connection in building B which hasn't been discovered.

    Any further ideas much appreciated.

    Jeff

You say the buildings are only 10 feet apart correct?
If they are on the same property it would seem there would be some common conduits between the buildings.
If not thats easy enough to add by electrical contractor.

    Thanks Scott.

Sorry I meant around 10m, which is around 32 feet.

I believe one of the cables from the switch in building B must run to a gateway (Internet) point, but where this is I don't know. The cables are running through numerous walls and some are covered by various objects as well as having been painted over!!!

    What about wireless ?

If line of sight is clear between the 2 buildings, it should work.

The best way to connect two buildings is always fibre. No earthing issues, no signal loss, maximum speed/bandwidth available. Unfortunately, best isn't always practical, but if you have the option to use fibre, take it.

A colleague traced it to a faulty connection which runs through an attic between the two buildings. Not sure if this was the fibre connection or simply an ethernet connection. Cannot imagine that it would have been an ethernet cable running that distance between two buildings!!!
