    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)
As I understand your post the CD-ROM drive is recognised by Windows and should be visible in Windows Explorer - is it? - and your problem relates to being unable to burn on that drive?
disc as in CD, not hard drive?

Are you using Windows inbuilt burning software - which only burns CD's BTW, not DVD's

If you are using the Windows software go to Windows Explorer and right click on the CD drive > Properties > Recording tab - is 'Enable CD recording on this drive' checked? If not check it and try to burn.

If you are using third party software this setting is best unchecked.

    Post back with an update.

    Hi tessloff

If you go into device manager (start->run devmgmt.msc) and click the + beside DVD/CD-Rom drives what is listed below?

Does the drive show up in Device Manager as wildfire asked? ....
    Screenshot below.

If the drive is shown right click on it > Uninstall/remove and reboot to let Windows redetect it and install. Test.

There are at least 2 possibilities to explore - you may find the first a little daunting .....

Read and follow the instructions in this Microsoft Knowledge base article which refers to your problem .....

You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording program in Windows XP: "error code 31 "

The reference to code 41 is here .....
    Follow the Guided Help.

If this does not resolve the problem the drive may have failed even though you say that you can play pre-recordrd CD's. The only way of testing that possibility is to install the drive in another computer and test - this assumes that we are talking of a desktop, not a laptop.
