Using Windows Explorer, I have three network drives mapped. Not doing anything and keeping the focus on my c:\ tree, the left-side of the window keeps flashing every few seconds. It looks as if it's trying to keep refreshing itself over and over and over, making it hard to look for files. Is this a bug or a "feature" that I can turn off? Thanks!

Try turning off Indexing and see if the feature is removed.
