My daughter's laptop stopped playing sounds a while ago. In the volume control and the device manager it says there is no audio hardware. I updated the driver for her card, but that didn't help. Testing the sounds in the control panel does not work, but occassionally there is an error beep. How can I tell if this is a hardware problem or not? What else can I do to help? It is a fairly new (~ 1yr) HP. Thanks!

    Hi KenD.

    Some more information please?

What is the model number of the laptop?
Where did you get updated drivers from?
What OS is on the laptop?
Is there any unknown devices appearing in device manager?

It is a Compaq running Windows XP. There was something in Device Manager which had an '!'. I can't remember what it was; I disabled it, it went away and didn't come back. I got the driver from hp.com. For more details I will have to wait until I can see the computer again.

    No problem,

When you can, the actual model number will be useful.

Assuming that your Audio is AC97 onboard, if so check in your BIOS if AC97 is enabled.
