system Windows XP home service pack 3.
We needed to access adobe reader 8.1.3 (?) but we got a message: there is no such program while it is. We then uninstalled the adobe reader 8.1.3 and tried to download the Adobe reader 9. It would not install to program files. We then tried to install the installer to the desk top and from there tried to install it to the PC. , but we got the same message. See attachment. I do not know how to change the installation user interface option.
ps. I did search the forum for a similair issue before posting.http://voltigeur.net/boot.jpg

Got this from Google hope it helps>>>

This advertised application will not be installed because
    >it might be unsafe. Contact your administrator to change
    >the installation user interface option of the package to basic."

This problem could happen when the application is not completely
uninstalled from the system. I suggest you can test the following approach
    to check:

If the application is a Windows Service -
    1. Go to START, RUN and type (without the quotes): "Services.MSC" and click
    OK.
    2. If the service exists in the list, you will need to use INSTALLUTIL.EXE
    to
remove it. To use INSTALLUTIL, do the following:
    * Go to START, RUN and open a command prompt by typing CMD. Navigate
    to the
    C:\Windows(or WINNT)\Microsoft.NET\Framework\(version number)\
    * InstallUtil should be in this directory. Then type the following
    (without
the quotes): INSTALLUTIL /U "Path to the .exe for the service"
    * After the service is removed, you should be able to move forward
    with the
    installation.

If the application is a component in the Global Assembly Cache, do the
    following:

    1. Navigate to the C:\Windows(or WINNT)\Assembly and check to see if the
    component
is listed in the GAC folder.
    2. If it is, you will need to use GACUTIL.EXE /U to uninstall the component
    from
the GAC. Use GACUTIL the same way you would use INSTALLUTIL (above) except
    set the
pathing information to the location of the .DLL or component used for the
    GAC.

If the application is a Windows or Web application -

    1. Go to START, RUN and type the following: MSIEXEC /X "path to the .MSI
    file you
want to uninstall" and click OK.
    2. After the application is uninstalled, try installing your MSI file
    again. If you
get the same error, then some portion of the application still exists on
    the
machine. You will want to use MSIZAP to remove the product, or you can
    search for
the PRODUCTID of the msi package in the registry and remove the associated
    registry
    keys. The Product ID looks like {xxxxx-xxxxx-xxx-xxxxx-xxxxx}

    Hi voltigeur,

Not having hp oem and not familar with hp boot optimizer (hpboot.exe) I did see references to this program being problematic for some application installations. The recommended method was to uninstall "hp boot optimizer ". Apparently it can hide or prevent some applications from being listed or seen in the add/remove control panel, msconfig startup list or systray.
You may having something running that your unaware of because you can't see it. Hopefully it's not viral or malware related.

I could be wrong but your screenshot looks to me like the problem is with installer confusion and both hp boot optimizer and adobe reader are trying to install at the same time. Which indicates to me that in the least there is some conflict going go. See the below link and try uninstalling "hp boot optimizer" as directed:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=bph07149#

After reboot and confirmation that this program has been uninstalled and no hpboot.exe is background running task. Clean up your tempts, take a look at your add/remove programs list and see if any adobe reader dregs are now seen that may have been previously hidden, and try installing adobe reader once again.
    -------------------------
Have you had hp boot optimizer problems in the past? Have you uninstalled it in the past or tried to prevent it from running by using a method other than the hp intructions. Perhaps you've added hpboot.exe to a software exception list in order to block it.

If you continue to have problems, I would do a search on HP support (including their forum) site to see what hp boot optimizer is and any problems or updates that this program may need or if the thing is needed at all.

Thanks for the reply TomXP and Goddez1, According to the Adobe web site, there was no need to uninstall the old version, which we did anyway to make sure the problem was not with the old version ie. not regognized/found by Windows. I did look at the same link Goddez1 posted, but was not sure how to proceed. I will now attempt to do that and will report the results.

Hurah! I did shut down Zone alarm security system (I still had the AVG running)and lowered the I.E.7 internet security level to low. Adobe reader 9 got installed and works properly when a program needs it to open. I am still puzzled as to why the Adobe reader 8.1.3 was not recognized as being on the computer.
    Thank you for the replies.

    Hi again,

Are you Joe van Raamt? I was actually going to point you to an Hp forums post:
    http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service...47626+1235501396148+28353475&threadId=1316936

but I guess this would have been pointing you to your own fix. :)

Glad you sorted this out with a fix that worked for you.
    ------------------------------------

The below is guess work on my part and may well be wrong.

I, as you, am still curious as to why you had problems in the first place. I was trying to find out or clarify what an "advertised application " might mean, as referenced by your first error .jpg. My understanding of this is, it's an app that may be advertised as installed by windows but is actually set to install on first use. Problems with many of these is that account security level of administrator is needed. This may mean you have to be logged into the actually true Administrator account, as least as far as an "HP Boot OPtimizer" uninstall/install goes.

The other problem may well have been (or is) that one or more of the security applications, you have, has security levels/options set so high as to block the installation process. Or your account is having permission problem.

Dunno! but you've worked through and won this fight, let's hope install problems will not continue to be a battle that you will have to struggle through one install at a time.

Your most welcome and thank you for the update. :)

Yes, I am Joe van Raamt and posted on the HP IT resource forum as well hoping to find a quick reply. As I mentioned, I am still puzzled as to why Windows could not find the previous Adobe reader, because we had no problems before and it was definitely present in the "Progran Files ". We had made no changes to the security settings of IE7 and Zonealarm that could have caused the problem. My thought about it is: perhaps something became corrupted after installing a scrabble game and despite removing it, it did not correct the problem. (System restore could not restore to the chosen restore point)

When is the last time you had a look at your event viewer to check for problems?

Or your services for that matter?

Yes I have, but it is all a mystery to me. I have tried before to check the errors with google and Microsoft web sites, but it does not really solve the problems for me as i have difficulty following written instructions.
