    Afraid not ....

The usual way of installing Windows is to boot from the installation CD - those disks ....
What is missing there is 'a new installation of Setup from the XP installation CD'.

The computer is booted from that set of floppies and loads generic drivers for the CD-ROM drive from which Setup can be run (from the install CD) using DOS commands.

Up to Win98SE that was the only way of loading Windows from a CD - the boot floppy was provided with the CD.

    Pete . . .

    Here is what I did.

I went to the internet using Google Chrome.

Downloaded CCleaner and ran their registry utility. (Totally Free)

They flagged about 80 ActiveX problems in the registry. Fixed/deleted them

    Rebooted the system.

Installed IE7 for the fourth time.

It was a clean install and all is back to normal!

I also use Ace Utilities and did run their utilities but somehow they missed these ActiveX problems.

At any rate I never did know what caused the problem sad to say as there may have been good knowledge there.

But it all works great again.

Thank MUCH for your help Pete.

    Rick

Rick - that's great news to greet me with this (sunny) Saturday morning :) I am familiar with CCleaner and indeed have it installed, but am very leery of any Registry Cleaner and will only use one as a last resort and in exceptional circumstances. I'm glad it worked for you - I had not considered an ActiveX problem - my congratulations on your persistence :)

    H Pete . . .

IE 7 for some reason will not access some password protected or function at all.

Wells Fargo opens and operated great. Another name brand name bank does not function at all.

If I select windows Update from IE 7 nothing happens. If I select the Start Button and then Help and Support or Search in XP Pro SP3 - nothing happens.

What could possibly be the problem?

    Thanks Pete . . .

Try adding the URL to the Trusted Zone and uncheck 'Require server verification ....'
I think your problems lie a little deeper than just IE7.

I suggest you download and run Dial-A-Fix. Set a manual restore point and check all boxes bar Flush Software Distribution and hit Go. When it has completed hit the button with the hammer head icon and select 'Reinstall BITS' > Go and 'Reinstall Help and Support Service' > Go

See if Windows update and Help now function.
