I recently formatted my computer (for a number of reasons, mainly viruses and such) and reinstalled windows. Ive noticed my speakers arent being detected, no sounds have been playing. Also, ive reinstalled a few games like Battlefield 2142, and they crash immediatley. Ive googled a few things, and looked at the DirectX Diagnostic Tool, and under the Display tab, everything under Device says n/a, and in the Sound tab, theres nothing under Device at all. The last few times we've had problems, we had it fixed at a computer store by our house, but its becoming too expensive. Ive fixed my computer on my own before, but this has never happened. I believe my video card is ATI Raedon something something..., and my sound device is SoundMAX Digital Audio i think. I hope ive been descriptive enough, this is really starting to frustrate me, please help :[

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

After you formatted the drive and installed Windows did you install the motherboard chipset drivers and the ATI graphics drivers?

If you did not you need to do so - do you have a motherboard CD with the chipset drivers?

If not post the make and model no. of your mobo and of the ATI card and we'll point you to the download sites.

If you don't know that detail download and run System Information for Windows which will show that info.

    Thanks for the program!

Okay the manufacturer is Dell Inc.
    the model is 0U7077

at the bottom it says Warning! Accuracy of DMI data cannot be guaranteed.
does that mean anything? the video card is ATI Radeon, but since my computer wont detect it anymore im not sure of the actual model, but looking at the system requirements for battlefield 2142 which usualy runs on my computer, the card is probably ATI Radeon 9500 or greater. i remember it having an x in the name.

thank you soo much, i fixed my video card problem, but i still cant fix my sound

i installed the chipset thing, and then i went to audio and downloaded Analog Devices 198x Integrated Audio Driver, and it opens the soundmax installer, but then it says Driver not found! Reboot your system, and open this setup again.

Sound, video and game controllers -
    Audio Codecs
    Legacy Audio Drivers
    Legacy Video Capture Devices
    Media Control Decives
    Video Codecs
Also under "Other Devices ", theres Multimedia Audio Controller, and it has a yellow "!" next to it. Sorry this becoming so complicated!!

Its not a hardware problem. The sound hardware is being detected by Windows, but it doesn't has the necessary drivers for it.

Did you receive any cds with your computer ? The driver should be on one of these cds.

i know it has to do with drivers now, and ive known that for a while. the drivers i downloaded from petec for soundmax wont install.
also, i have no idea if it came with a CD or not, my dad bought this computer about 4 years ago and set it up and everything, and ive asked him numerous times if it came with cds but he doesnt remember.

It appears that the 8400 came with either an integrated sound system or a plug in sound card - can you confirm which of these you have?

If it is integrated the system specs suggest ADI 1980 AC'97 Codec which may or may not be Soundmax related, it is one of the standards.

I think you already tried this driver .....

    http://support.dell.com/support/dow...-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=3&fileid=122481

If you do not have a plug in sound card and cannot find a suitable driver for the integrated audio rather than take the computer to a shop it would be a lot cheaper to install a plugin sound card.

i just asked my dad, he says he thinks its integrated, but im not sure, in all the years ive had my computer, ive only seen SoundMAX digital audio, nothing else.
one thing i noticed is under other devices it says multimedia audio controller, with a yellow exclamation point next to it, would that have anything to do with it?

EDIT:I THOUGHT I tried that driver but apparently i didnt.... and it worked! thank you soooooo much!!

Great :) I was puzzled that the driver Dell offered would not install. Glad to hear you're back in business!
