For about the last week whenever I try to exit IE7 - either from the FIle menu or the upper right 'X' - the error message pops up that "Internet Explorer has stopped working ". Of course this is redundant since I want it to stop working.

If I do nothing, it goes to the "close program" window.

If I click 'Cancel', it either stops or goes to the Restart message and restarts!

This is not terrible, but it is annoying. What is going on here?

First step is to check if there is an add-on which is causing the problem ......

Right click on the IE icon on the desktop > Start without add-ons - does this resolve the problem?

Alternative route - Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Internet Explorer (no add-ons).

Hi Ken. :) In addition to what Pete said try running ATF Cleaner from here. When you run it select all the checkboxes and then hit the empty selected button. This will clear all your temporary files on your computer. Does Internet Explorer work properly now?

If it doesn't, try shutting down all backround progams that are running in the system tray in the taskbar to avoid any conflicts with your installed programs and Internet Explorer.

If that also fails to get Internet Explorer working correctly then try opening IE and click tools< internet options< advanced tab< reset button.

See if Internet Explorer shuts down properly after performing those steps.

    Partial success

Thank you for the suggestions. When I start IE with add-ins disabled, it closes normally. I tried disabling add-ins individually, but the results are inconsistent so far. Sometimes it closes normally, sometimes not. I did close and restart IE. I will keep trying. Thanks again!

Rather than disable individual add-ons it is better to go Tools > Manage Add-ons and disable them all. Then re-enable one by one, testing each time until the culprit(s) are found - it may be more than one add-on causing the problem.
