    Hello all,

    I'm new to the forum.

I've just done a clean install of spanking new Windows XP SP3 after a hard drive catastrophic failure. New hard drive installed, of course.

Windows XP freezes randomly when running CA Antivirus about 1/3 of the way through full scan. I've also experienced random freezes while doing a CD or DVD burn. System works fine for light duties.

I've run the Western Digital diagnostics from DOS and all three installed drives are passed without errors.

I've also run the Windows Memory diagnostic and MemTest86 with no errors reported. I installed a new Crucial 1 GB stick with the HD. Crucial's website memory finder matched it up as compatible with my MSI 6380E MOBO.

I've checked drives and cables. I've also re-seated PCI cards and switched around the memory stick in connectors.

CA Antivirus runs without a glitch in safe mode.

There is no BSOD and no memory dump files are logged.

    I'd appreciate any input. Thanks

    Michael

    Welcome to the WindowsBBS :)

You have covered most if not all of the items which we would have suggested checking :)

    One thing stands out ....
This suggests a conflict with a driver on the system. I guess you loaded CA before anything else. I would try uninstalling it and re-installing - if that fails to resolve the scan problem I would again suggest uninstalling it and installing a freeware av for test purposes - Avira, Avast ....

Thanks PeteC, it was a CA antivirus driver problem. I've been running it so long long on my laptop and this PC I couldn't conceive that it was the difficulty.

Pete C, it looks like I spoke too soon. Today I booted up the desktop and went into Windows Media Player to burn a CD. After setting up one or two mp3s to burn the system foze without BSOD or reboot.

I then tried buring the CD with CDBurner XP with the same result i.e. after setting up one or two files to burn the system froze.

I then went into DVD burning software (Clone DVD 2) and successfully burned two DVDs without a problem. Odd.

I have uninstalled CA Antivirus and replaced it with AVIRA AV. I ran Avira and it did a full scan. However an hour later I tried to do another full scan and it froze the system,

    Very frustrating, ideas? Thanks.

I'll download SIW and report results.

With the utility supplied with the MSI MOBO, the following on Voltages and temps:

    48C (CPU) 29 (sys)

    VCore-1.71

    3.3V-3.39

    +5V- 4.97

    +12V-12.18

CPU Fan; 1 SYS Fan and 2 PSU fans running Ok

Enermax 350 W PS not acting unusual to naked eye.

I ran the WD diagnostics from DOS the other day with no errors reported. I'll give it another run.

    Thanks.

Keep SIW running - it gives Max, Min & Current values of temp & voltage and run an Avira scan - keep SIW on top so if it freezes you have access to the data.

Check in Event Viewer for any error events - flagged in red. If there are any right click on event to open and on the icon below the up/down arrows to copy to clipboard and paste here.
Generally not a good idea to have two burning apps installed - I would try removing the first - don't see how this would be related to freezing in an av scan though.

    Random Freezes

Thanks for the input. This AM booted up and ran AVira AV without incident. Running SIW in the background.

I had uninstalled all burning software except Windows Media Player 11.

Next I attempted to burn a CD using WMP. Once again WMP set up one or two MP3s and then the system froze in place--no BSOD or reboot.

The following showed on the SIW sensor log at time of freeze:

    Voltages

    CPU V Core 1.73V 1.73 1.74

    Aux 3.41 3.38 3.41

    +3.3V 2.98 2.94 2.99

    +5V 5.46 5.40 5.48

    +12V 1.76 1.70 1.82

    Temps

    Sys Temp 26c 25 26

    CPU Temp 43 42 43

The results from the BIOS and SIW differ, but you recorded the latter from the frozen computer. There may be a clue here .....

    +3.3V 2.98 2.94 2.99 10% low

    +5V 5.46 5.40 5.48 10% high

    +12V 1.76 1.70 1.82

Would you confirm the readings for the +12v when the computer is running normally and then induce a freeze again and post both sets of results.

I'll look over the Events a little later.

Personally, I think the SIW may not be reading the 12V rail correctly, you wouldn't expect the computer to run at all on 1-2 Volts. I would believe the MSI utility. You should check for updated chipset drivers, that may allow SIW to read it correctly and it may actually solve the problem.

If you haven't updated the drivers, especially if you have installed SP3, I would check at MSI for updated ones (and the graphics adapter manufacturer).

Have you cleaned the dust out of the case recently (and checked the air intake vents)?

    Matt

System Temperature seems quite good (my MSI AMD system says 38*C :)), but my CPU temp is 19*C (although I just started it up).

Check for dust under the CPU fan, blocking the heatsink fins (don't remove the heatsink from over the chip).

It's an older board and I have latest bios and drivers from MSI. Also latest Nvidia drivers for the FX5200.

Gave it a good compressed air cleaning after recent hard drive failure and vents free and clear. I'll give it another.

Below are +12V numbers from Speedfan utility:

    Running normally: 12.34

    At Freeze: 12.34

    MSI utility shows it as:

    Normal: 12.18

    At freeze 12.18

    Thanks.

Rolled back Windows Media 11 to WMP 9. Seems to have solved difficulty. Keeping fingers crossed.
