Spoolsv.exe teminates with the following error upon PC startup (windows desktop present):

Application popup: spoolsv.exe - Application Error : The instruction at "0x100041f0" referenced memory at "0x00000004 ". The memory could not be "written ".

No changes to printers or drivers prior to this change in behavior. No network printing involved.

To attempt to fix this I deleted all the printers under:

    hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\print\Printers

in the registry and then rebooted and still had the same error.

Then I reinstalled the 930C driver, which had previous worked without a problem, and rebooted, and still had the problem.

I would appreciate any suggestions that this community might have.

I appreciate the quick reply, but unfortunately, non of the suggested fixes were possible in this case. I cannot restore to a time prior to the first occurrence of the problem, and there is no problem with spool file junk. I cannot start the service because it was not stopped, but terminated before it completely started.

Purchasing another spyware program may be possible, but with the protection that I have already, another spyware program is unlikely to fix the problem.

The real question, I believe, now becomes, how do you reinstall or repair the the spoolsv service?

I'd say run SFC /SCANNOW from the Start > Run window.

It might be a good idea to run chkdsk /r to check for drive errors first.

I've got to go so I'll leave you with a final suggestion, in case the previous didn't help, run Regedit and drill down to:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Printers

Export the Key for a backup. Then delete all printers listed there as sub-keys.

Then reinstall your printer and see if it has solved your problem.

Thanks for all of the suggestions:

I have run chkdsk /r, sfc /scannow, and had previously deleted printers in the registry, and reinstalled the printer driver.

I have decided to pay for Microsoft help and emailed them with my actions to date. It will probably be a day or two before I hear back from them. If you have and suggestions that could preempt them, I will them out, but this appears to be something that may take Microsoft's expertise.

OK, but try physically disconnecting/unplugging the printer for a test.

The last time I had a nearly unsolvable printer problem, it turned out to be some service that the user had disabled on the advice of someone who proposed to add some speed to the system.

As I recall the service was Application Management or possibly Application Layer Gateway Service. Verify that you have both running.

    Good luck.
