I've updated to IE6 SPI a Win98 Se Laptop without any problem.

But I can not update IE 6 for my WinMe desktop. When I try from Internet with Windows Uptade, i recive this message "Setup unable to install all components. Could not be installed because of unknown error ".

I've cleared all cache files, download all files and tried without any running program and also in Safe Mode.
Not any change. The installation do not succeed !!!

A quick search for any updated log file show me that "setupapi.log" is updated each try.

I'll post here the last log.
Can somebody help me to decrypt this log or have a suggestion.

I already have tried with the full set of files as opposed to the "web installation" without succes!!

Now to be sure, I've once again I've just dowloaded a new set of (IE6 SP1) files, deleted all items in the MSDOWNLOAD.TMP and the WINDOWS\TEMP folders.
Start without any active programs (disable NAV 2002, ZA Pro 3.0, etc..) just have Explorer and Systray remaining active in in the program windows.
And trying again.! No change, just the same message "Setup was unable to install all components. Please close all applications and try running Setup again.
I've have tried in Safe Mode too !! :-(

About unsigned or incorrectly signed file ?? I don't understand, I've buy and install a Official OEM Windows Me 18 months ago. And I've upgrated to IE5.5, IE5.5 SP2 and IE6 without any troubles ??

I'm already searching for 1 week !! Does have some body any ideas ??

I've tried everythings you've suggested without success.

Also, I've downoad all IE6SP1 files from MS site and yes, I've select de WinME version.

Now, I'll completly de-install IE6, reboot, re-install, reboot end try again with the update SP1

I don't understand what kind of "unsigned or incorrectly signed file" I'm missing  . In MS support, any reference to that or "Munged cmdline" or "Error 0x800b0003" is for W2k.

I'll post again after this test.

    Update succeed

Well, it was not possible to de-install IE6 in WinME.
Then I've tried to "repair IE6 ". No change, IE6 refuse to upgrade to IE6_SP1.
My next try was to re-install WinMe onto my existing configuration.
After the re- installation, IE was down-grated to version 5.5. Then I try to "Web Upgrade" to IE6_SP1. No change, IE5.5 refuse to upgrade to IE6_SP1.

In a desperate tentative, I tried "Web Upgrade" to IE5.5_SP2 with success!! :p
Then I crossed the fingers and from IE5_SP2, I tried to "Web Upgrade" to IE6_SP1. And YES updates done correctly, all components are install and upgraded!! :D :D

Funny I had the same problem, and solved it the same way.

Only when I was able to get 6.0 installed it completly destroyed my file structure. I ended up having to reformat.
