    Using Windows XP Pro SP3.

    This just started hapenning.

When I attempt to open IE 7 I get an error window (see attached).

If I select save or cancel buttons the error window closes and IE 7 never opens.

I also use Opera V9.63 but I've been using Opera for more than a hundred years in conjunction with IE versions. I also have google Chrome installed.

    The Error is: Name google_com.htm
    Type: Opera Web Document
    From google.com

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

This is a new thread but I can't find the "management attachments" button!

    Thanks.

    Rick

You need to be a Contributing Member to post attachments. Upload the image to photobucket or similar and post the URL here.

Check that IE is set as your default browser.

Start IE with no Add-ons - Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools ....

If that works you have an Add-on problem - not sure if you can go Tools > Manage Add-ons and disable the lot when starting IE in that mode - to late here now to try. If you can disable re-enable one by one, testing in between each until the culprit is found.

The other suggestion is to reset IE ....

Right click desktop IE icon > Properties > Advanced > Reset.

Nothing Manageable in System-Tools? Can't see any add-ons.

I can't access my work URL because it only allows IE, not other browsers.

    This hurts.

    Thanks . . . Rick

    Close IE.
Go Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools, and click on Internet Explorer (no add-ons). Same thing?

When I click on IE 7 a window opens up and wnats to know "which user account do you wish to you for this application. "

Current user or adminstrator. There both me!

This window never used to show up.

IE 7 is the only program that has this window where this window open.

    What could cause this?

    Thanks . . . Rick

    Rock ....

You have not provided any feedback to the suggestions made earlier in posts #2,4,5 - that would be helpful :)

It is possible to disable the Run As feature, which is what I guess you are seeing, but that will have a global effect .....

How to disable the Run As feature on a Windows Server 2003-based or on a Windows XP-based computer

I wonder if you may have corruption in your User Account - create a new one and see if the problem persists .....

How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile in Windows XP

Another possible solution is to roll back to IE6, test and then reinstall IE7, but as you have SP3 installed this is a little long winded - read this first ....

IE and Windows XP Service Pack 3

Finally a resumé of some of the advice already posted....

Internet Explorer 7 does not start or stops responding

Hi Rock - went to the "Internet Explorer 7 does not start or stops responding. "

On step 3 of that page the START, ALL PROGRAMS, ACCESSORIES, SYSTEMS TOOLS Internet Explorer doesn't even show up!

When I open IE 7 and then go to Internet Options it says Access denied and displays the error message below.

I CAN open IE 7 but when I log on to a web site that requires my user password I get this error message, "This operation has been canceled due to restriction in effect on this computer. Contact the Administrator. "

I think there is something gone haywire with my log on.

I am the single user of this computer. I have the administrator and then myself using my name. Don't know what the password for my name is. Can I delete this account?

I have no other problems getting on line with Opera or Google Chrome.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks much . . . . RickinSoCal

Did you expand the System Tools section by clicking on the double headed arrow? - screenshot. Alternatively right click on the IE icon on the Desktop > Start without add-ons.
Checkout the possible solutions here in post #2 ....

    http://www.techtalkz.com/internet-explorer/69255-unable-access-internet-options-ie7.html
It may be blank. If you delete that account you will lose access to all programs installed under your name.

Silly me . . . Pete, I've looked at some of your suggestions including uninstalling SP3 to uninstall IE7.

Somewhere in this problem I then lost everything in Windows XP Pro. A new desktop with none of my settings. I'm the only user of this computer so I'm not sure hat happened.

But, in the task of correcting it I was able to get my own desktop back and even am now able to use IE 7 again.

Here is my current situation. When I access IE 7 a window opens up and has Adminstrator selected as the default. I know my adminstrator password but IE 7 doesn't open when I enter the passowrd.

If I select the only other user choice, my name plus a password (non restriction user account which is how I log on when I turn on the computer) IE opens up and works ok except that I can't select Interner Options. I get that " . . . due to restrictions error" that I refered to earlier.

Is there a way to force IE 7 to recognize a specific user account when requested to run?

Also, each time I access IE 7 all of the toolbar and icon setting are not saved from my previous session. I have selected lock toolbars.

If I can conquer these two things I'll be happy.

What do you know about IE 8 beta?

    Thanks Pete . . .

This is a real puzzler - I have not come across this before ....
Based on these two comments .....
There should be no need - you required administrative rights to install IE7 and indeed any other software. Out of interest check the permissions for iexplore.exe ....

Right click on iexplore.exe (C:\ Program Files\Internet Explorer\) and go to the Security tab and check the permissions for each user listed.
On that basis I wonder if you have a corrupted user profile - as an exercise create a new user profile and follow the steps outlined here .....

How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile in Windows XP
I have been running it for some time, currently RC1 without issues ......

    Internet Explorer 8

I have no idea if that will solve your problem, but would point you to IE and Windows XP Service Pack 3 again ....
For beta1 read RC1 and the option is in Add/Remove Programs.

explore.exe seem to be available to any user as there are no users listed at all.

I tried reinstalling IE 7 but the installation failed and the troubleshoot icon was no help.

When I select "Help" "About Internet Explorer" NO WINDOW showing a Version opens at all!

I think the installation is corrupted.

So I assume that I need to uninstall SP3, then uninstall IE7, then reinstall SP3 and the IE7. Is this correct?

Will I lose all of my favorites?

    Thanks Pete.

    There's a fair chance :)
    Yes, from the IE Blog....
In theory I think not, certainly not in my experience when flitting between 6 & 7.

If you are still able to open IE7 by one means or another export your Favourites as backup .....

File > Import/Export and follow the wizard.

    Ok . . . uninstalled SP3. no problems.

Uninstalled 2 ie7 updates and then ie7. It said IE7 was successfully uninstalled.

This DID NOT revert to IE6?

When I looked in ProgramFiles\InternetExplorer Version 7 was still there.

I'm at a great loss now.

    What next?

    Thanks

This is not running to the script :(

With nobody else chipping in I am almost out of ideas, but reacting to your current situation ....
I am reasonably certain that is to be expected. Is it still present in Add/Remove Programs.

As IE 6 has failed to materialise I suggest running IEFix

If that fails to resurrect IE6 I think more drastic steps are required - apart from reinstalling IE7 to test again - a repair install of Windows for which you ideally need an XP CD with SP2 included or slipstreamed, i.e. your current SP level.

Hi Pete IEFix does not supported in IE7 it says when I ran the program.

Interesting that IEFix recognizes that iexplore.exe 7.00.6000.16574 is still installed - even after a supposedly successful uninstall.

If I select the three files in C:\ProgramFiles\InternetExplore folder:
    hmmapi.dll
    iedw.exe
    iexplore.exe

and right click then delete, after a few seconds they reappear again. If I secure erase the same things happens, they reappear?

I've tried renaming the iexplore.exe but that reverts back to its original name automatically.

    This is really daunting.

I don't have an XP disk of course. Most computer manufactures don't supply that now days.

I don't know what to do next.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks Pete.

Yes, I knew that, but supposed that IE7 had actually uninstalled, clearly not.

The files you reference are all Windows Protected files and as such copies are maintained in the dllcache from whence they are automatically restored if the copy in Windows is removed.

As you are unable to effect a repair install - actually any XP CD with the right service pack will suffice, there are these options .....

Attempt a manual uninstall of IE 7 as outlined here in Method 2 ....

How to uninstall Internet Explorer 7

If that is unsuccessful go for broke and install IE8 RC1 ......

    Reinstall SP3 first and then IE8 - reasoning is outlined here (for IE8 beta 1 read IE8 RC1) .....

IE and Windows XP Service Pack 3

When I run %windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe the error message says that the location is unavailable ? ? ?

    I'm going to try IE8.

My guess is that it will not install successfully.

Well I tried IE 8 which totally crashed my system and I needed to use a boot CD disk to get up and running again.

Lets see now . . . IE 7 won't run or uninstall. IE8 totally crashes the computer.

    I HATE Microsoft!

I can understand your frustration .....

The system clearly has some problems - my best suggestion is to go back to square 1 - may solve the problem, but at least it should eradicate any system problems induced in the past few days.

I would advise a full backup of your data before using System Restore to a day or so prior to your IE7 problems.

Rereading your first post and the error message re. Name google_com.htm I just wonder if Chrome is the culprit - clutching at straws here :) even though it states Opera Web Document.
