    Hi,
    I have 3 partitions on my hard drive (C, M & N ).

I tried to move "My Documents" folder from my c drive (where OS is) to "N:\John\My Documents" on my N drive.

I then tried to restore "My Documents" folder back to C drive per Microsoft's Article ID 310147.

Now when I try to save a document to "My Documents" folder using the "Save As" Dialog Box, I have a "John's Documents" in My Computer and a separate "My Documents" folder further down on the list in the "Save As" dialog box.
If I click on either one of these "John's Documents" shows up in the "Save As" dialog box and the body of the "Save As" dialog box is empty in both cases.

If I click on C:\Documents & Settings\John\My Documents, all of the documents show up in the My Documents Dialog Box.

If I try to save a new document, I have to click on C:\Documents & Settings\John\My Documents for the new document to go to the correct My Documents folder.

I have a "John's Documents" in My Computer and a "N:\John\My Documents" on my N drive that I would like to delete if possible.

Does anyone know how I can do this if it is possible.

    Thanks.

Hi jslow, when you first moved the "My Documents" Folder did you right click my documents > Properties > Target >
Move and select your drive or partition from there, including move all files and folders. You should have then been able to select Default to move them back to C.

    Hi Hawk22,

    Thanks for the reply.
Yes I followed the instructions in Microsoft's Article ID 310147, but I still ended up with some duplicate files from the My Documents folder in N:\John\My Documents.

Sorry for the delay in responding back to you.
What happens when you try to delete the N:\John\My Documents, I know normally you can not delete a System Folder, but I am not sure what happens when you have a duplicate of that folder.
Have you checked N: My Doc. Properties Find Target and then select Default or Move again if it will restore default settings.
If this will not work maybe someone here has more experience in solving this problem.
Otherwise you can always rename one of them.
If nothing works than you might want to back up your files and folders from N: format and move back what you like to have back on N:
Sorry to be of no more help to you.

    jslow,
are you familiar with the registry? If not, don't make any changes but only do the search. Before that, read How to back up and restore the registry in Windows.

The registry contains the information Windows uses to store your personal data in the location selected by the user (or the default location). To find out:

Click Start > Run > type in: regedit > OK

Click Edit > Find > type in: user shell folders > click Find next

The result should display the key:
    Code:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
In the right hand pane, which is the path for "Personal "?

    Hi Hawk22 & Christer,
    Thanks for the replies.

I finally posted in a MS Word Newsgroup and received the following suggestion:

I mentioned on the post that if I click on Tools, Options & File Locations in a Word document, it still lists documents to be sent to N:\John\My Documents.

What I was doing was typing in a symbol "&" instead of spelling out "and" in C:|Documents and Settings\John\My Documents. When I changed the & to and, this changed my path back to the C drive. As a result, I was able to delete the N:\John\My Document folder on the N drive.

So everything seems to be OK now.

Christer, I found the info you requested. It is:

    %USERPROFILE%\My Documents

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Christer,

Yes, I did miss the Sticky post.

I used the MS Article ID 310147 when I tried to move My Documents folder.

    Thanks.

All seem to be well and that indicates the default location.
