    Hi !

I get an error message and black screen: Non system disk or disk error, replace and strike any key when ready. When I insert windows xp cd. It boots up without any problemsl. The system had windows Me before with the same problem. I deleted previous partition and installed xp to correct the problem. I have windows xp service pack 2, Gateway keystone, Amd 1.2 gig processor and 128 mb memory. I tried repairing master boot with recovery console, fixboot command, and I got message that repair had been successful., but problem remains. What else can I check next?

It's possible that your HD is going south. If you have any valued data on it, back it up to separate media.

Then run the manufacturers diagnostic software to determine if the drive is healthy. Verify the drive manufacturer and get the diagnostic software from one of the links offered HERE.

It the HD passes the test, then we can take further action.

As a side note on this 128 Mb of RAM is nothing like enough to run XP regardless of what MS may say. Performance will be extremely sluggish - XP needs 512 Mb RAM to run reasonably well, more is better.

Thanks Pete and Surferdude. I had downloaded the hd diagnostic tools software but then noticed I had left a floppy in A drive. I removed the floppy and windows xp booted normally. The motherboard bios is set to boot on hd first, but it still wanted to boot from A drive. I am just guessing of course. I know I should have checked the basics first.
I just hope I remember to not leave floppies in drive next time.. Thanks again. Frank

There's most likely another option in your BIOS that is called (something like) Boot Up Floppy Seek and usually found in the Boot settings section. If unchecked, you can leave a floppy in your drive but it won't affect your system boot :)

The HD diagnostic usually works for that type of problem since you can't get two floppies in the bay at the same time. :)

I'm glad it was that easy Frank. We'll have to charge you nevertheless. The fee will be for you to monitor this site and pitch in when you can be of help. ;)

    All the best,
    Dude
