I tried to update from the MS update site but no go, while I was there my auto update icon came in my task bar so I closed the update site and clicked on the icon to update all went well with 4 updates then I hear the .net Framework update in not needed. I go to add/remove and see I have many updates for this same program. When I try to remove the latest one it tells me I can't uninstall it because other programs depend on it. I also get a small pop up say saying (Fatal error during installation) So I try a system restore to a good date and my system will not restore. I would appreciate any suggestions on what I should do to uninstall all these .net Framework installations since they are using lots of space.

    Thanks

Hi Sophie. Chances are the .net Framework installation programs are required for some of your applications. As a result you can't remove them from your computer. The .net Framework updates are essentially required for some of your applications to function properly.

There are other ways to free up harddrive space on your system.

Run Disk Cleanup, Start< All Programs< Accessories< System Tools< Disk Cleanup. Check all the boxes except for compress old files.

Download and run ATF Cleaner from here, http://www.majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html

Go into Add/Remove Programs and remove any other programs that you don't use. Also while in the add/remove programs window click the button that says add/remove windows components. Uncheck the checkboxes next to Indexing Service, MSN, Windows Messenger. When done click ok.

Thanks Evan I will follow your instructions and post back, I am worried about the fatal error message I got, my guess is that happened when I canceled out of the update site to go to auto updates. Thanks

Evan I have lots of compressed files and I have always deleted them before during disk cleanup....can you tell me why I can't continue to delete them or what damage I did by deleting them in the past?

    Thanks

Sophie, you can compress old files in disk cleanup. Its up to you. IMO compressing files does save disk space but compressing files can slow down your system. The compress old files option only compresses files that you don't use very often, it doesn't delete them from your computer.
