I'm running Windows XP and IE 6.0. When I double click on the IE icon to open the program, sometimes it opens the page right up (just like it's supposed to), but sometimes nothing happens. I've noticed that after this happens, if I get into the windows task manager, iexplore.exe is running in the background eventhough IE itself is not open. I then have to click on that process and end it. I can sometimes try to open IE 3-4 times (to which 3-4 iexplore.exe's run in the background) before it works. Other times, it works the first time I try it. I ran Spybot and Ad-Aware to clean things up a bit, but that didn't help.

Does anyone have any idea what is causing this to happen and what I can do to rectify the situation? I'd like to avoid upgrading to IE7 if possible. I don't really like it. Thoughts? Comments?

    Hi TheDirtyOne.

Try running WinSock Fix. Also try running ATF Cleaner from here.

If those steps don't work then try shutting down all backround programs that are running in the system tray since one of them could be conflicting with Internet Explorer 6.

Lastly, if those steps don't resolve the problem try Repairing Internet Explorer 6.

Let me know if you can get Internet Explorer to run after performing the above steps.

Thanks Evan! I just ran the ATF Cleaner and that seems to have done the trick. I'll try the other options if it becomes a problem again.
