    Just had to re-install winxp and apparently made one minor error: I have a choice on boot up to choose between loading the Media Center and loading the Media Center. Obviously a mistake but I MUST choose. How do I get rid of this choice.

    :eek:

    It seems like you have two copies of XP installed.

    How did you do the reinstallation? Booted from the CD? Started the CD from within Windows?

    How many windows directories are on C:?

    Post your boot.ini file for us to look at .....

    Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Startup and recovery - settings button .... Edit button - boot.ini opens in Notepad. Copy/paste here.

    BTW do both startup options work?

    [boot loader]
    timeout=30
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS= "Windows XP Media Center Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS= "Windows XP Media Center Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

    I don't know if I tried both. If I do and both work then can I just delete one of these settings and SAVE??

    I've noticed this when doing some reinstalls at work. I'm told it's harmless enough, and you can make the message go away by doing the following:

    (right click) My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery: Settings

    In the new box that's open, just uncheck the line item for "Time to Display List of Operating Systems." You won't ever see that message on boot again.

    But I, too, am curious as to what generates it in the first place. We choose to wipe and go with a fresh Windows install. Delete all the partitions and then format the whole HD in NTFS. Somehow, we have about 50-50 odds of seeing that on next boot.

    Your boot.ini file indicates that you have Windows installed on two different partitions of the primary hard drive. It's up to you to check and see if that's true. If it's true and you are able to boot either one, you'll have to decide which you'd like to keep. Your original install will likely be on the C: drive while the second will have went to the E: possibly. If you had a problem that prompted you to do this reinstall, you probably still have that problem on the original system. Were you trying to do a Repair Install or a clean install?

    It's a simple matter to edit the boot.ini file and relatively save. Just figure out which system you want to keep and go from there.
