    [FONT= "Times New Roman"]Hi,
I have the instructions for adding destinations to the Send To list for pre XP OS.
I tried to use that info for XP and hit a wall. I even went into the system folder and there is no Send To folder.
I was wondering where I can get step by step instructions on how to do this in XP Pro. It seems to be a different animal altogether in many applications.

The path to that folder on XP is:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\SendTo

Change the OWNER (if necessary) designation to what matches your system setup.

Anything you put in that folder should appear on your right-click send to menu.

Alternative for opening your sendto folder is by using the starmenu>run line and typing sendto. Sendto is all one word, no spaces. "Your ", meaning the account your currently logged into. As said any shortcut moved in to the "send to" folder should do it. Just be sure it is shortcuts your putting in the folder and not program executables themselves.

If you need a step by step just ask. :)

Hi Surferdude2, Thanks for responding to my query. I went to My Computer, C:, Documents and settings, A folder with my name on it opened that and found a folder titled Send To, I made a New Folder and named it Start List.
Then checked my right clicked list and Start List did appear but I think I missed a step because when I tried to send something to it nothing went anywhere. Did I forget something??? Or do I have the wrong name for where I want to send this icon to? I wish to add a shortcut to the list that comes up on top when I click on the Start button.

Thanks for also responding to my query. I wrote the steps I took to try and get the Start list on my Send To in the previous reply to suferdude2. If you see where I went wrong please let me know.
    Thanks,

You put a folder in the sendto folder?

You can make a folder anywhere you wish and name it startup list.

From the starmenu run line type sendto
once your sendto folder opens right click in it and select make new shortcut
browse to where the folder startup list is, that you previously made
apply and okay your way out.

    ----------------
out of curiosity what is it your planning on sending to this folder, named "startup list "? Or what is it your hoping to be able to do.

    ==============
as a side note you may be interested in adding a "copy to" and "move to" option to the right click context menu. This will give you an option to right click an item and copy it or move it to a destination you desire. If so:
    see tweak number #45

Yes, I did create a new folder in the Send To folder named it Startup List and nothing worked out so I deleted it.

So then I right clicked in the open field of the Send To folder, went to New, then clicked on shortcut and got a wizard window prompting me to type in the name of the new shortcut I typed in Starup List and clicked on next and got a message that said 'the file Startup can not be found'.

What I am trying to do is make it so I can send whatever shortcut I want to the list that appears on top of the normal choices above 'programs' I get when I click on Start. Just can't seem to do that.

    Hi blakston6286,

Xp can already do this. Just right click on the shortcut you desire and select "pin to start menu ".

The above is just one way of doing this. There are other ways but trying to make a shortcut for the startmenu in the send to folder in not one of them.

    Run as
Scan using Spybot Search and Destroy
    Scan with AVG free
    Scan with Ad-Aware

I hate to be repetitive but it is imperative that you realize this option will only appear on a right click to a "shortcut" or "executable ".

(^Edited to correct myself: executables (files with the *.exe extension) also have an option to pin to the startmenu. This results in the making of a shortcut to the *.exe that is pinned to the top of the startmenu.)

Are you sure this is a shortcut or *.exe you are right clicking on, not a folder, not a doc, etc.

I just want to make sure the process is clearly understood and being done correctly, because there is a fix for a missing option of "pin to startmenu ", if this proves to be a problem. See below the ------.

If you don't mind sharing the following information:
where is this shortcut and what is it to?

    -------------------------
May be needed after making sure this is not an error on the users part:
how to fix a missing pin to startmenu option

    Hi all,

I've got to step away from the computer for a bit. It's dinner time and husband trumps computer. :)

    Hi Suferdude2,
I see your still here. Perhaps you can see something I've missed or offer another perspective on how blakston6286 can accomplish what he is trying to do. Please feel free to jump in or fill in.

    Will be back soon.

    Hi Ann,
    Sorry to monopolize your time.
I very much appreciate your help with this problem
One of the shortcuts I have been trying to pin to my start menu is on my desktop. It is the icon of the new version of Ad-Aware.
When I right click on any shortcut there is no option 'pin to start menu'.
The peculiar thing is that at one time that option was there and I was able to pin quite a few shotcuts to the start menu. However, quite awhile ago it simply disappeared.

You could possibly benefit from re-registering your shell32.dll file.

Get Dial-A-Fix and run it after tagging all the boxes it offers. There is a radio button that does that or you can pick and choose. That may fix your right-click issue.

If it doesn't, we'll have to dig around some more. Let's try the easy way first. As far as I know, you should always have the right-click "Pin To Start Menu" option when right-clicking any shortcut that has an executable as its target. If it's a shortcut to a program file that requires an association to an executable, then that option isn't offered.

    Good luck.

BTW, you can drag and drop ANY shortcut to that area just by right clicking the shortcut and dragging it to the Start button, pausing until it opens the menu, then dragging on up to the area you want it located. Release and choose "Move Here ", if asked.

    Hey Surferdude2,
Sometimes the simplest things are the best solutions, at least for me.
I can simply send whatever I want to my desktop then drag it and drop it to the start button. Pure genius!!!... Maybe it is one more step than normal but a fool proof way never the less. Works like a charm. I never knew I could do that. Thank you for sticking with me long enough for that to surface.

Thank you surferdude, Ann and sourabhbasak for helping me figure out the best ways to solve my problem. I am grateful to you all.I hope there are others who can view this thread and benefit from the information in the future.
    my sincere gratitude,
    Aryan
