    Hi all!

I recently downgraded from Vista to XP, and now I have no sound, except for when I play games or listen to winamp.

Youtube clips are completely mute and so is other programs when I run them.

    System: XP Pro, 5.1.2600 sp3 build 2600

    What's wrong? Please help!

    / Frank

When you downgraded did you load the XP chipset drivers?

My motherboard is Asus, and there are no XP chipsets for it, so I used Driver Detective, which was supposed to find the right drivers, but maybe that didn't work?

    Any suggestions?

Have you tried adjusting the volumes of the different type of mixers? I've had that happen to me once before and the wav volume was set to low, where the rest were set at normal.

As far as I can see you have a Compaq - here is the motherboard spec for which only Vista drivers are offered. This is often the case nowadays with newer components and XP suposedly 'dead in the water' - not :)

Looking on the Asus site the nearest I can get is Asus MN268 - no suffix, but XP drivers are offered. what concerns me is that the audio drivers are from Via and I would have expected nVidia with an nVidia chipset.

A generic driver for the ALC888S - supposedly on your board is available here for XP and Vista .....

You could try this or the Via driver at Asus, but make a manual System Restore point first :)

If you are unable to load either of these drivers the workaround may be to install a PCI sound card.
