Any of you have any experience with Win2K Terminal Services? I'm new to this and curious if there's anything I need to know before I blaze ahead....

Lots with using TermServ to remote control servers. Is that what you intend or are you using other features?

    Lots also!

Remember that to connect remotely with just 2 connections, that you do not need nor should not activate Terminal Server mode!

Do you just want access to administer? No more than 2 users at a time?

Now if you are setting up for many simultaneous users there is some considerations!

For 1 if you activate TS on a server you will put a load on it like putting a small cube of bricks in pickup truck! Smile!

You will notice immediately at least triple the boot time!

So before you do it on a busy server you might want to consider a stand alone TS machine!

Now even if you have several users that call in at somewhat different times and you have the horsepower on the server it will probably be OK!

But you need to think it thru. If you have a large or busy network I would not just jump in there!

Guys, this is a server we specifically bought to run Terminal Services. It's dual processor AMD Athlon 1800+ and tons of RAM. We hope to have one processor dedicated entirely to the Terminal Services. The Terminal Services will be used to run application for remote users across a wireless network using CD/PD. Rather than having them make an active network connection, we're going to use the Terminal Services to dole out the apps they need from the server, that way there isn't the bandwidth crunch going across CD/PD wireless.

Given all that... what pitfalls can I expect?

    It's Easy!

That is the way to go!

Set the computer up have it connected and doing everything you want it to do for TS users first!

Then activate TS in Application mode and set up!

    Now jump in there, now!

Hit a hard place Newt and myself and many others will be here to help!

Yeah.. from all the reading I've done, it seems easy enough. Just wondering if there were some things slipping through the cracks. When things are too easy, I get worried. *chuckle*

Well, I'm installing now--what makes it easiest is that this is on a brand new server so it's a matter of adding it as I build. I'll let everyone know if I encounter problems.

    Thanks...

It's pretty stright forward to set up and get going!

When you get to printers it can be picky sometimes!
Especially if using DOS programs! But I've been there done that!
So if you have probs here just call!

Make sure you set all the perf options. Like turn off Active desktop use temp folder etc!

Well... successfully installed and the Terminal Services Client Licenses and the Server License are installed (including configuring the Terminal License Server on another domain controller as recommended). It all went smoothly.

My only question now is how do I add the licenses for MS Office XP that will be run off the machine? We have individual licenses for 15 medias--can I add those to the License server somehow? Also, what about licenses for another software package that doesn't a license requirement? How do I install licenses for that, or do I?

I don't remember all these steps. If I were at my office (am home now) where my servers are I could look an refresh my memory!

Can do tommorow! I will try to get back then but if verry busy maybe tommorow night!

Probably the help will tell you!

Maybe Newt or some one can do it sooner!

    Mike!

I've spent the better part of 2 hours research and I can't find any means in which to install application licenses. It says that each client is required to have a valid application license, but I'm not sure that it actually tracks them through the license server. We have them, as they were new purchased and came with the media, so I'm going to assume that having the licenses for verification should Microsoft come storming in our front doors is enough.

If anyone knows otherwise, please let me know.

    Thanks!

You are right! I really didn't think about what you said!

    Other application software.

Even if you do or don't register, what counts is that you are legal!

You have all the licences so don't sweat it!

I am at work now and usually don't have time to check my home email but was getting ready to write you!

    Have a good day!
