    HI

I have norton av, if i go in the sercurity centre and change automatic updates to "notify me but don't automatically download or install them ".

My anti virus icon changes from a green tick to an orange cross, telling me to fix this, if i do fix this it will put me back to automatically recieve updates
    Can i just ignore this.

And have "notify me but don't automatically download or install them ".

Yes you can change it to "notify me" but take notice when it says some updates are available.

In fact its my preferred option as I download all the updates directly from MS & save them for future use.

that sounds ok, so i should just leave the norton anti virus icon with the orange cross on it, as i thought it was a warning

Which version of Norton? NIS or NAV only? Which vintage?

I use NIS 2007. Under "Options" there's the possibility to "ignore Windows Update warnings ".

    carl101,
    you're welcome ... :) ... !

A note to anyone who reads:

I checked my own NIS 2007 and it is version 10.2.0.30 = we were lucky. Different features get moved around and looking at one version, in an attempt to help someone using a different version, does not always work (or rather seldom). This makes it important to specify the software version when posting the question.

A lot of people don't like norton, because of the resources it uses, but because this is included in the package i have got use'st to it.

I have just been looking in the help pages, there are a lot of interesting things in there, which i have not really bothered with.

so i surpose having any anti -virus on your computer, is worth taking time out to understand, what it is doing, and what you should do if things go wrong.
Which is why i am going to do just that.

One more thing though, a couple of weeks ago i had that "malware" "antivirus pro plus " on my computer, norton did not pick it up, superantispyware did pick a few things up, but in the end malware bytes completly removed it
    :)

That's a recurring discussion which I almost never let myself get involved in. I'm currently running NIS 2007 on my old BOAC (1 GHz Athlon - 512 MB RAM) and I have no problems with NIS itself, only with LiveUpdate which runs every hour or so, slowing things down for a few minutes. On computers with a somewhat faster processor (~2.5 GHz) the issue becomes a non-issue. In addition to that (better hardware) more recent versions of NIS use a version of LU that has been improved.
