    Hi,
I recently formatted my computer and installed Windows XP Pro SP3. For some reason I can send packets but not receive. I have read a lot of threads on many different sites. I have tried lots of things but nothing has fixed it.

    Quick List:
    1. Winsock Fix
    2. Winfix 1.2
    3. ipconfig /renew
    4. static address
    5. downloading drivers and chipsets etc.
    6. making sure IP and DNS are automatic
    7. dns rests etc.
    8. uninstalling - reinstalling drivers
    9. reinstalling windows xp pro
    10. restarting router / modem checking cables.

The modem etc are not the problem because I can connect with other computers.

I get the APIP address on start up. I never receive any packets for some reason. When I renew the ip I get cannot find DHCP server. I found the Default Gateway using another computer and configured it automatically but that didn't work either. I have a fair amount of knowledge when it comes to PCs and have no problems finding drivers etc. I am out of ideas and any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi Spike,

    Welcome to the board :)

Networking isn't my forte but looking through what you've tried one thing does stick out.

Have you looked at your firewall settings? If you've already ruled this out I'll step back and hopefully some network guru will advise.

Thanks for the quick response. I knew I would miss somethings in my list that would come up.

So I will add as I remember / get reminded of them.

    11. I have disabled firewall and results were the same (Firewall is currently enabled)

Do you have ADSL or Cable? Did you get a setup CD from the ISP, if so, run that. If not, how was the internet set up originally? Are there any set up instructions at the ISP's website?

Connect directly to the modem when you are setting up (leave out the router). The system probably requires "drivers" for the modem. If they are not available from the ISP, try the modem manufacturer's website.

The modem and router will have an IP address for configuration. You type the IP address into a web browser to access the settings.

Contact the ISP's helpdesk if you run out of possibilities. If the modem was supplied by them, they should get it going reasonably quickly.

    Matt

It's a cable modem. I have been hooked up only to the modem for most of my testing. I have also installed drivers (and had no problems with other computers with no drivers installed) no help there either.
I Found the ip address of my modem (192.168.100.1) I am able to get to it from my working PC but not able to from the broken one.

    Any other suggestions?

Have you tried a different network cable? Could also be a faulty network card.

Ya thats unmber 10 on the list. Pinged the loopback as well and was successful so I don't think its the NIC. Will make that number 13.

    13. Pinged loopback, NIC seems fine.

If by loopback you mean ping 127.0.0.1, that doesn't get to the NIC. That just goes up and down the Windows TCP/IP stack. All you've done is test your Windows TCP/IP stack is working. You haven't tested the NIC.
