double-click not working to open drives

Was looking in CONTROL PANEL / FOLDER OPTIONS / FILE TYPES tab / looking at the DRIVE. Went into the ADVANCED menu (just to have a look, did not intend to change anything) where it shows EDIT FILE TYPE. There were two options in the ACTIONS menu, neither of which I clicked. However, when exiting the menu I hit the "OK" button instead of the CANCEL button.

Now when double-clicking a drive to open it, it starts instead to open my PAINT SHOP PRO program (which, strangely, was one of the ACTIONS options above "¦ the other option was FIND).

How do I turn this off? I don’t even know how I turned it on.

It only happens when double-clicking the hard drives or removable storage drives; folders are fine.

I can right-click of course and open the drives that way (thank goodness) but would prefer the old double-click.

Any thoughts? BTW, my System Restore has NEVER worked, not even once, so that is not an option for me.

    Thanks for any help.

Hi PwyllTwiceborn. Click Start< Run and type regsvr32 /i shell32.dll and press enter. Reboot the computer. That should fix the problem. :)

PwyllTwiceborn, Even though you have fixed your problem, I'll stick the following in for some other poor soul that may need an alternate way to fix this problem. It'll make this thread more informative and reward me for compiling all this data that I rarely get to use. ;)

Fix for "Clicking folder opens Search" (actually it may open whatever is queued next on your particular context menu)

FYI, This quirk is most often caused by opening Explorer or My Computer and clicking on the Tools > Folder Options > File Types > File Folder and selecting "Advanced" then clicking OK instead of Cancel. Even though you have only looked and made no changes, changes will nevertheless be made IF you have selected "Advanced" and IF you then click OK. To avoid this, always click "Cancel" when you don't intend to change things.

A fix can be had at http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_folder_open.htm Follow the screen directions at that site.

As an alternate to the above fix, you can go to Start >Run and type:

    regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
ps. Be sure to include the space before and after the /i

Press enter or click OK. The effect is immediate with no reboot required.

You can also use a program called Dial-A-Fix for this and other fixes. Available at http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/Dial-a-fix.shtml Install and run the program. It will automatically detect this problem and ask you if you want to repair it.

Another method is to manually edit the Registry keys:

Click Start > Run > type regedit > click OK
    Navigate to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
On the right hand side double click on "default " and type none in the field
    Navigate to: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
On the right hand side double click on "default " and type none in the field
