Never had this happen with any other time I put a system together. I loaded Windiows XP and some other programs. Used the system a few times that day. Went back later that night and went to boot the system. It got to the the part that Windows was loading and the screen just went black. The power supply was still working. I hit the reboot button and nothing happened. I hit the power button and it still keep running. I had to use the power switch on the power supply to shut down. I then tried the monitor on another system and it worked and I hook it back up to the system I was having a problem with. I waited awhile then tried to start it again. I hit the power button and the power supply ran, the fans (case and CPU) were turning, the red light shows the hard drive was working. Still no video and noticed that the DVD and Floppy drive lights did not come on while the system was booting up. The board is a MSI K9N6PGM2-V version 1.3. It has on-board video. I also hit the DVD button to make the tray come out and got nothing. Then I had to shut the system down the same way I did before. I then took the power connector out of the DVD. I have one of those kits where you can hook up a drive to a USB cable and has its own power supply. I just plugged that power supply into the DVD drive. I did not take the drive out of the tower case. The DVD did not work. Then I also unplugged the IDE cable going to the drive and turned on the power. The drive tray worked. I replugged the IDE cable back into the drive and the drive would not work. Changed IDE cable. Same problem. I took the SATA Hard Drive out and ran a virus check and spyware check and it was clean. What do you think maybe the problem? Could the board be bad?

    Hi Russ,

    Excellent strategy, my compliments.

I'd say PSU, CPU or MB

Are you able to test the PSU or try another?

    NOTE:
Do not try the current PSU in another system, use a meter to test it.

Thanks for the reply. PSU checkout OK I think. Have no way to check it. Did try a different PSU with the board, so that is why I think it is good. Forgot to put that in my first post.

    Hi Russ,

The reason I wanted to rule out the PSU was

Usually a faulty board or CPU wouldn't prevent the drive tray from opening. I'll step back now and let other more experienced people advise you.

Disconnect both the power connector and the ribbon cable from the floppy drive and from any optical drives. Try booting again. If no go, disconnect the ribbon cables from the motherboard too. Try booting again.

    ;)

If still no luck, disconnect any hardware that is not necessary for startup, floppy drive if it has one, PCI cards, usb devices, etc.

My MSI M/B is good when it is going, it is a pain when when it has trouble. I have problems similar to those. I disconnect and reconnect drives and cards from it and after a while it starts going again.

Thanks for all the replys. It was the power supply that was bad. I had a power supply that was given to me that I was told that it worked. Put it in a box to keep it as a spare. That was that one I put in to check the system when I had the problem. After thinking what wildfire posted I took one out of my old system that I new was OK. Put that one in and that ended the problem. So now I am waiting for a RMA number to return the new one I just got and the other is headed for the junk pile.
