If a document is created in Word97 on the pc in question and then it is saved as a Word.doc and then closed and reopened the document appears with the following characters at the top of the first page bjbjt+t+
The document itself then is followed by several pages of "information" such as

    Normal
    Normal
    Heading1
    Heading2
    Default Paragraph Font
    Subtitle
    Body Text

These line of info also include paths and other stuff!

Unfortunately all this text prints out as well so basically the docs are useless.
    No virus is apparent.
    Any advice most welcome.

    Hi Tim Walls
Have you tried finding the normal.dot template, renaming it to normal.old or some such....rebooting and letting Word re-create a new template?
(make sure to show hidden files when doing your search)

Thanks Daizy for your message. I have managed to solve the problem now and it was caused by the fact that the user had recently opened an old doc from some other application and this had set Word to "Recover Text from any File" when opening docs.

    Now ok
