    Hi,
    I'm trying to set up a P2P network..I have two D-link DWL-G850
gaming/bridge adapters which according to d-link can be used this
    way..
I've been at it for nearly 40 hours and have been unsuccessful.
The telephone help is useless (can't understand Indian). Anyone
have step by step instructions and numbers ect.? Or any Ideas ?
    TIA

Peer to peer network is one of those terms that has been used and abused for a long time and means different things to different people. Therefore, the first thing you need to do is describe what you are trying to do:

What devices are you trying to connect together (for example, computers, game consoles, other)?

Over what sort of connection (for example, within a home wired network, over wireless, over the internet, over a dial-up connection)?

Who do you want to give access to (a few select people or everyone)?

Are you trying to give access to a particular piece of software or server?

Maybe i am missing something but i cannot seem to locate your model number or perhaps i am looking in the wrong sales region
Basically a peer to peer network in the case of wireless ( which i assume this is) is a network in which the signals are locked in
this is as opposed to an infrastructure wireless network where the router hands out a signal on a given channel and the network cards are scanning the channels
You are locking in the reception on a single channel
The biggest problem with wireless by far is rogue signals drifting in long distances
the card will bounce between the two signals and not have a consistent internet or whatever signal to lock onto

first change the channel from the default channel 6 to anything else - 1 and 11 are first picks
make sure the ssid is set correctly , and is not the same as standard defaults ( in this case the word default) even if you add a single digit to it
Transmitters should be high and not cluttered
What is the range of this device ?
Try setting the system up where the items are very close to each other
Use a laptop to diagnose signal and signal interferences
Netstumbler is much more sensitive than the standard windows wireless utility which does not give channel info and may not even see signals that have their beacons turned off for security ( which is more common now)
Remember that rogue signals ( especially with dsl) may be sporadic and not on all the time
Lastly make sure your wep or wpa code is correct
after a long time of frustrations it may just be that simple error

    P2Pnetwork

Thanks ReggieB and visionof..Your notes are helpful but still no joy.
Computer is running XP Pro and I'm trying to communicate with a set top
box (Satellite Receiver) which has a static IP address.
I'll be the only one communicating with it..When this is working properly
Which it had done in the past (thru my wireless network) I can change
channels on the receiver and perform other functions. I still have the
network and have tried using the D-link DWL-G820 as a access point but
couldn't get that to work again.
I have two G820's that I would like to use for only this purpose (in ad hoc,
P2P mode. I must be setting something up wrong still no joy.
    TIA

Does the set top box have a wired network connection? The video streamer I have is difficult to set up via wireless, but is very easy via cable. Connect the unit via cable, configure the wireless setting to match the d-llink (using the info ephemarial's pointed you at), and then try accessing it via wireless.

    P 2 P Networking

    Thanks Reggieb,
Yes the set top box has a ethernet cable hookup (that's what I'm using).
Also using the ST boxes IP ( I can set this IP) Still no luck
in getting the DWL-G820 talking to my desktop puter.
    The ST Box is: 192.168.1.105
    DWL-G820 is: 192.168.1.111
    Compuer is: 192.168.1.101
    router is 192.168.1.1---Linksys WRT300N
I have no problem talking to 3 other computers
    on my wireless net.
EPHEMARIAL, I did have those instructions but what I
have has very little on P 2 P..Thanks.
I've worked on this many hours (both trying P 2 P and just by
    my wireless network..still no joy)
    Ramjet TIA
BTW the ST box works OK with a direct hookup using a
    crossover cable.

Have you tried disabling encryption (WEP or WPA) on the router and then trying to set up the set top box? Once you've got the set top box talking to the router, you can turn the WEP/WPA back on (after updating the set top box to suit). Also make sure you haven't got a MAC filter set up on the router.

    P2P Network

    Hi,
I have tried with the WEP/WPA turned off still no joy. I haven't tried the MAC filter but will do so.
Can anyone direct me to some definitive instructions (read:step by step) for
setting up a ad hoc (P2P) network between two computers. I don't care about
outside interference (the net will only be on a short time each week)
    I have two D-Link DWL-G820 gaming/bridge adapters that I want to use.
    TIA Ramjet
