My wife's laptop has Vista Home Premium on it. I went to apply the two updates that were ready to install, one of which was Microsoft .Net Framework 3.5/SP1. An error message came up that said the windows module installer had stopped working and the update had failed, yet the update window looked as if it was still going. I tried to stop the installation to no avail, so I decided to reboot (probably a big mistake). When I clicked on restart, it started installing the updates, or so it says, but has been sitting for over an hour now with hard drive activity.

My question is, if I power the machine off, will it be the kiss of death, and if so, does anyone have any idea what I can do at this point?

Hi Bill on my Vista machine, .Net Framework 3.5 wouldn't install from windows update and it failed everytime I tried to install it. I had to download it manually. Make sure you shut down all backround programs that are running in the system tray to avoid conflicts with the installation. Download .Net Framework 3.5 from here, .Net Framework 3.5.

After its installed download .Net Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 from here, .Net Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1. Let me know if you run into any problems. :)

    Hi Evan,

Thanks for the reply. What about shutting down Vista? Right now it is still stuck on the screen "don't turn off your computer or pull out the plug" because it is trying to apply the update. Is it safe to turn it off?

If the computer has been sitting there trying to configure the updates for over an hour then ya you will have to shut it off. It normally doesn't take more than a few minutes for windows to configure the updates.
