I recently downloaded IE 6.0--now I can't receive attachments--I know this is probably based on the Privacy area but I just don't know how to set the Security and Privacy areas to where I'll be safe and still be able to receive and send attachments. Also, I imbedded a picture in an email yesterday to my sister--when she received it all she saw was a box with an x in the upper left corner. Also, I often get an icon in my tray that shows a Privacy Report--again, I'm sure it has to do with the settings but I just don't get it!! Could really use some detailed help here--not too technical. Thanks.

Go to Tools, Options, Security tab and uncheck the box about opening and downloading attachments.
As far as your sister goes, the problem may not be with your OE. Some mail (like AOL) so not support all the standard graphics formats. Try sending her a jpg, and gif, and maybe a png and tif image and see which types she can receive.

The alternative is to save your email letter as a mime-encoded html document and zip it so she can read it in her browser. To do this, click File and Save As.... on your letter. In quotes, save the letter somewhere as a mht file (example, "example.mht ", with quotes).
Zip it with Winzip or a similar program and attach it to a regular text mail. This has been the only way I've found to get my fancy emails through AOL to my friends.

Thanks for your reply...I really think it has to do with my privacy and security settings. I just sent an email to my own address and I got the text message but not what I had embedded into the message. Here is what my email said when I read it: "OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in your email ". It was not an unsafe attachment which is why I am led to believe it has to do with my settings. I don't know where to go to find out about safe settings yet still having the ability to send emails like I sent to myself. I also get a lot of blocked sites with that red circle with white line through it on the bottom of my screen. Any thoughts?

The "red circle with white line through it" is a blocked, third-party (not from the site you are visiting and not from you) cookie. That is a good thing to block.

pkl--Please tell us what happened when you followed Abraxas' suggestion. That should take care of your receiving attachments.
As far as sending images, the problem could be at your sister's end as has been suggested, but it could also be at your end. Click Tools|Options|Send tab. Is the box "HTML "checked? If not, check it. Then click the button "HTML Settings" and check "Send pictures with message" in the next window. Click OK and then "Apply" if active.
As far as the Privacy Report, I suspect that is part of IE6. I have it, but with WIN98. When I want to see a Privacy Report which tells me what cookies are on the current website, I click View|Privacy Report. Perhaps in other Windows versions you get an icon in the Taskbar. If you do not want to see that icon, try right clicking on it and see if you have the option to Delete. You should still be able to access Privacy Report as I do, as mentioned above. Try using your IE Help to learn about privacy and security settings (or other subjects like inserting images).

Oh, boy! I'm just trying to figure this out......now, when I send an email to my own address (for the sake of experimenting) nothing except text shows up without clicking on attachment which brings up a window, what do I want to do with attachment--open or save it to disk. I just don't get it--I checked my Norton email status and it is auto-protecting OE--I don't understand why a picture is being added as an attachment and not imbedded in the email itself--I have checked the area to send pictures with email. Is this part of IE6 heightened security? Any thoughts?

Go back to your Tools, Options section. Click on the Send tab. You need to send emails in html if you want the picture to show up in the body of the letter.

Not trying to beat a dead horse here but it is already checked. What should the MIME message format read? Mine shows "Quoted Printable ". Thanks to all for all your help!

Save the following as a .reg file, right-click on the newly created file and select Merge:

    REGEDIT4
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.GIF]
    "Content Type "= "image/gif "
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.JPG]
    "Content Type "= "image/jpeg "
    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.bmp]
    "Content Type "= "image/bmp "
