This is a many part question. My husband's work partner gave me a W2888 eMachine. Fast little machine if it worked. First thing I did was open the case and take a boo inside. (Oh, it wouldn't power on). A little dust, so I used my brush to clean it off the UPC fan. I did a little research and found that eMachine uses the worst Power Supply! I took the PS out and noticed the dust on it. It was a tad dark so I rubbed in on my fingers. Sure enough, this PS burned up at some time or other.

That is the nutshell version. So I know I need to get another PS. The questions I have are: I am going to test the CPU/Vid card/DDR/ etc on my Dell. BEFORE I do I need to know this: If the CPU got fried, will it do anything ignorant to my MoBo? I am afraid this eMachine is just fried and I need to gut it. What would be the use of buying a new PS if it fried anything else? Including the MoBo?

I didn't try anything else, no power is no power. I have several spare PSs but none of them have the P8 connector needed to run the media stuff. This box has a DVD reader and CD-RW.

Suggestions? And the one suggestion I don't need is the dumpster!!

Try the safer options first (ie HD/CD/DVD drives).

It is well known that when those Bestec power supplies fail that damage can occur to the motherboard. I would not test any of the Emachine parts on the Dell. Try one of your spare ATX power supplies to see if the Emachine will power up. You should be able to rest the power supply on top of the case for testing.

But none of my power supply units have that P8 connector. Can I still check with out having that? I am thinking I can because I am not connecting anything that will use need it. Thanks!!!

    More eMachine stuff

I am taking the ps and a couple of the ps's I have to a friend at Radio Shack to test to see if they work right. There is also a little converter piece to convert one of the connectors to the P8 connector. So that part is solved.

I have been looking this box over today and I find there is NO CD-RW and it looks like there never was. What I thought was an A drive is actually something that connects a microdrive, another USB port, and somethings called SD/MMC/MS/MS-Pro which I will research and find out what they are.

I am going to use the DVD-reader in my Del, it is a nice one. And the memory stick so add 512mgs mem to the Dell. Then goodbye case/mobo etc. That is if when I get the power supply hooked up I find that nothing works. I just get burned out real easy on what seems to be a lost cause!!!

    Thanks guys for the input!!

    Jann :)
