I ran defrag on my 2nd (slave) HD, and it hung. I was forced to reboot the computer, and the 2nd HD doesn't appear in My computer or in Disk Management. I have XP SP3 OS on the master HD (C: ). All my important docs are in the 2nd HD. What can I do to get the OS to recognize the 2nd HD and retreive the docs?

    Any help is appreciated.

Gi Anthill. Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

Is the slave drive recognized in the BIOS? Have you tried opening the case and checking all the cables that go into the slave drive to make sure they are plugged in correctly? Try booting into Safe Mode. Is the slave drive recognized there?

    Thank you, Evan.

The cables were all correctly plugged in.

I unplugged the slave drive and re-plugged it in, hoping that the OS would recognize the new hardware automatically. It gave me an error saying that the it couldn't detect a primary drive. Took out the slave drive, leaving the master, and OS booted up ok. While slave drive was in, I heard a small but persistent clicking sound.

Was at Frys, the local computer store, and the people there said that the clicking sound indicates a hardware failure. A data salvage outfit could retreive the data on the slave drive, but it would cost up to $2k. Don't have that kind of money.

Know of any other ways of salvaging some data short of shelling out the $2k that I don't have? Thanks!

Chances are more than average of them being right :(

You mean you have important information & no backup? Guess this thought you a lesson.

I doubt you'll be able to access your data. If the drive isn't recognized when attached to a computer you have little hope of accessing it.

Since this is a hardware related problem, I will move this thread to the Hardware forum.
