Somehow the usual 'boo-dink' that I used to hear when plugging a thumb drive in or powering up my USB scanner has disappeared. Do you know how I can restore it?

Hi jeffreyclay. Does a USB flash drive still get recgonized even though the sound doesn't play? Can you use your USB drive or not at all? If you want to try and restore the sound then click Start< Control Panel< Sound and other audio devices< Sound< Sounds tab. Scroll down to device connect and test it to make sure its the right one. When done hit apply and ok. :)

Thanks for the input Omo. I don't show any 'Device connect' in my sounds. Seems like some default events and sounds have disappeared. Would you know how I can restore them?

When you are in the sound window, under sound scheme choose windows default and click apply and ok. Reboot the computer. That should restore the sound.

Nope, the default setting didn't bring the setting back. This may be related but about 1 year ago I lost the 'Device disconnection' icon in the system tray. Since then I've done a new XP install and that icon never came back.
