I have a Dell inspiron 2200 lap top and want to add an external monitor. I have a HP L 1506 flat screen that I would like to use. Would this be a compatible match, and if it is, is there any other hardware required to make it work ?.

    Appreciate your comments/suggestions.

Should work fine, try it out and post back if you have problems.

I was able to locate the correct cable and have both monitors working however I get the same image on both screens. When I use the fn-f8 keys it shuts one or the other down. What I am attempting to do is be able to have a different image on each screen. For example #1 screen with an excel spreed sheet and #2 screen with a Microsoft word page. I know it can be done, just not sure how.

Go into the properties of the graphics chip (display) and see if there is an option for dual view - I rather doubt that there is. This facility would not be found on a desktop with an onboard graphics chip either - a separate graphics card with two monitor connections is required here.

The D-Sub socket on a laptop is for use with an external monitor (giving the same display as the laptop screen) or as an output to a digital projector (also giving the same display as the laptop screen)

Add enternal monitor to lap top computer

    Pete C.

    Thanks for your response.

I was able to figure out the solution. connect the exterior monitor to the lap top. On the lap top if you go to the control panel , click on display, click on settings, if you see two blue squares labled 1 and 2, the # 2 box will appear shaded, click on the # 2 box and then put a check mark in the ENTEND MY WINDOWS DESK ONTO THIS MONITOR. This works great.

Glad you found that option - I've not explored the scenario you were trying to achieve so I've learnt something :)

Om my desktop with dual monitors I enable dual view through the graphics card software - it sets up Windows Display Properties as you indicated.
