" "shimgvs.dll" is not an executable file and no registration helper is registered for the file type "

also many jpg files names are now in a blue font.

Hi Todd,

That line using regsvr32 should be:
re-installing Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is to click on Start, Run... and type in the bolded text:

regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll

and press OK. Then press OK again on the resulting success message

---------------------
Are you familiar with reg patches? If any question about such just ask. This one may help....
scroll to and see the one numbered #80 entitled "Disable or Restore Picture and Fax Viewer ". It is the "restore" patch you want:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

-----additional info----------------------
The patch suggested is from Kelly's Korner, an often used, recommended, and trusted reference source.

To download these files you right click on them and select save or save as. Once downloaded you can view them in notepad as previously described. To merge them into the registry double click on them. A reboot may be required for the change to effect [unsure].

The above ^ patch is easily reversible, should the need arise and is, in my opinion, a "low to no risk" procedure.

Don't know what a reg patch is. Read on..........
Although you can edit the Registry with the Registry Editor, you can also make changes by using Registry patches. A Registry patch is an exported portion of the registry. It is text file, with the .REG extension. It is that extension that controls the behavior of the file if double clicked on. If you double-click on a .REG file, the patch is applied or merged into the registry, usually after prompting the user "if they are sure ". This is a way to share or back up small portions of the registry for use on your own computer, or someone else's. It is generally considered a much simpler, convenient and less dangerous method of editing the registry as opposed to manually editing. If curious, nervous or wishing to double check what will be effected by using a regpatch, they can be opened in notepad for viewing. Once you have determined the patch is safe you can apply it to the registry by double clicking on it, or by opening regedit its self and selecting the File>import option from the toolbar and browsing to the *.reg file desired.

It is advisable to backup the registry before making changes. Links to how tos are provided below:

Create a restore point

Did you download and merge the regpatch from kellys korner?

I thought the additional information I added about
*what a reg patch is and
*how to download and
*merge the patch after download

was sufficient enough explanation. Is this still not understood?

--------------
Any error during regsvr32 of shimgvw.dll?
Is shimgvw.dll in system32 folder?

Thanks again!

I merged patch #80

Yes it is

I'm not sure how to answer that... At this point… when I right click on an image file and open with shimgvw it give me the message…

Rundll32.exe – Bad Image

The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette.

When I close that message window it then gives me this message…

RUNDLL

Error loading C:\WINDOWS\System32\shimgvw.dll %1 is not a valid Win32 application

Also, when I open some wmv files in window media player is gives me the message…

%1 is not a valid Win32 application

I'm sorry to be so ignorant... i just don't know that much about computers... i should have just lived with the old slow computer... but I heard that the reg cleaner would make my machine run like it used too.:(

Also I installed window service pack 3 just before I installed the reg cleaner... not sure if that had anything to do with this problem.

I have tried to use restore points but windows says it can't do it.

Hi Todd,

Try registering these dll's. From run line type each bolded line , one at at time.:
regsvr32 /i browseui.dll
regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
regsvr32 /i jscript.dll

Then repair file associations such as:
fix or restore your image file associations
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/imgassofix.htm

If the above doesn't work........
based on your errors I think it is more important that we insure that this is not viral or malware related.

Please read this:
http://www.windowsbbs.com/malware-v...olor-red-before-you-post-log-read-font-b.html

follow directions and post the results in the "malware and virus removal" forum.

If your system should come up clean we can continue to explore other repair options.

Thank you goddez,

regsvr32 /i browseui.dll… successful

regsvr32 /i shell32.dll… successful

regsvr32 /i jscript.dll... gave this message…

RegSvr32
Jscript.dll was loaded, but the DllInstall entry point was not found
This file can not be registered.

I installed an ran imgeditror.exe and ask it to repair the jpg and other image file associations and every still stayed the same which is… image files have a paint shop pro icon but under tools/folder options/file types… they say they are opened with shimgvw… and when you double click on a file… it does nothing. when you right click and open with shimgvw (not sure why it's not listed as windows picture and fax viewer)... it gives the original error messages I listed in the other posts.

Guess I’m going to download rsit.exe

Thanks again.:)

I'll be looking for and waiting for the results of your scan in the virus and malware forum. I've got to say about the only things we haven't done is [1]replace the shimgvw.dll with a fresh copy, [2]use sfc /scannow or an [3]older restore point. The last two I haven't suggested because, if this does prove to be viral or malware related, they could cause additional problems or difficulties.

I suppose no harm could be done by replacing shimgvw.dll by:

locating the file in C:\WINDOWS\system32\, renamed it "old_shimgvw.dll" or something similar and and moved it to another folder.

Then you either expand another fresh copy either from an xp cd or
downloaded from a site such as
http://www.dlldump.com/download-dll-files.php/dllfiles/S/shimgvw.dll/download.html

Put it into the C:\WINDOWS\system32\ folder.
and register the fresh copy once again the command
regsvr32 shimgvw.dll
regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll

-----------------------
If choosing to expand one from the xp cd or an I386 folder (if you have one) You can either use dos commands to expand this or on the startmenu>run line open msconfig and use the button that says expand.

Dos command would be
EXPAND X:\i386\SHIMGVW.DL_ %WINDIR%\SYSTEM32\SHIMGVW.DLL

replacing x with the drive letter of the location of the i386 folder or xp cd.

Replacing the old shimgvw.dll with a fresh one did it!

Also... now the the icon for shimgvw has change back to the one it should be... before it was the one that windows usually shows when it doesn't know what to open it with (not susre if that is a very good explantion)? All my impage files jpg, gif, png... etc are all displaying the paint shop pro icon... but open with the picture and fax viewer... like they used too!

Thank you so very very for helping this computer ignorant person!!!

I learned alot!

Now... to figure out why my Windows Media Player doesn't want to play files... but that is another thread.

I'm sure there will be more damage in other places... I believe (but not totaly sure) a Windows update messed up my Microsft Outlook a couple of weeks before this happened... wiped out my address book and won't let me sync with my smartphone...lol more threads to come.

I hope you get a lot of satisfaction by doing this!
I appreciate your help so much!!!

Yeah!

I'm so glad to see this update. I was really running out of the easier ideas. As a beginner and not knowing your security habits I can still recommend a good routine of virus and malware scanning. You still may want to, at least, check out our excellent forums for such. Read the stickies, hang out for awhile. Now that you've discovered our site you may wish to explore it. There's a lot to learn here.
The archives can be most helpful for finding a fix to most any problem. Our members, here, are always happy to help.

Thanks for the update and your most welcome. :)

Yes indeed!

I think I will be here for a while... still have a few bugs to work out of this machine.

Not sure if it is really running faster after the registry cleaner… the tool I used is “Advanced System Optimizer†It has other tools too like a disk cleaner that get rid of trash and junk files… registry defragger… windows optimizer (not sure what it does… spyware scanner… an uninstaller… duplicate file finder… and I used them all.. lol!
I’m not sure what caused this problem… it could have been service pack 3? System restore could not restore the old dates except for the last few uninstalls.
I started having problems with outlook before service pack 3.
I think I had a conflict with my antivirus software that might of kept it from updating properly… cuz it wanted to update every 30 mins. So I would let it update and then it wanted to do it again… and again… lol
It McAfee… not my first choice but it’s free from Comcast… I think it was conflicting with my Webroot Spysweeper.

Oh ya... I was having problems with my windows defragger... I thought it was locked up and had to shut down by turning off the power.

Also… I had windows compress the files (not sure if that is good or not)

I might have done other things… but that is all I can think of right now.

I’m just glad this problem is resolved!!!

Thanks again… SOOOOOOOOO MUCH!!!

Hello one again Todd,

I tried to check out your profile for stats but there is none. All I know is that you have classified yourself as a beginner. Based on your last thread I foresee your about to attend "the school of hard knocks" :)

While this can be a good way to learn (from experience) > "what not to do ", "gain experience in formatting and installing windows ", and learn "the many ways one can break the operating system ", I don't recommend it.

I am going to include some google links that reference some past post from our board. Not all will be pertinent but I want you to pay close attention to the "old timers" opinions on using the programs, routines, and cleanups your experimenting with now. I think you will find that they are not recommended unless there is a specific reason.

Here's the links. You draw your own conclusions....:D
