Security update for SQL server 2005 Service Pack 2 (KB954606) fails to install. Tries to update daily automatically, but fails.
This has been the case since computer was new (5 months)
    Using Windows XP and IE.
    Any suggestions please? Thanks

Hi DJyoung. Do you have SQL Services installed on your computer? Have you tried downloading the update manually from the Microsoft website and then install it? If you don't have SQL Services installed then you don't need this update. You can hide it so that Microsoft update won't notify you about this update again. Have you installed Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Internet Explorer 7?

Find error codes associated with the failing update in the WindowsUpdate.log.

To open this log, go to Start > Run and type

    %windir%/WindowsUpdate.log

    and press OK.

    Post relevant info here.

For more information see: How to read the Windowsupdate.log file

I never installed SQL Services, so I guess I would like to hide this update as you suggest. How do I do that.
I am legally blind and use a special program that reads text to me aloud.
I was unable to make sence out of the WindowsUpdate log.
I am using IE vers. 7. I don't know if SP3 is installed, should I install it?

An easy way to stop windows update from notifying you about an update that you already installed is to do this. Click the yellow shield icon in the taskbar to bring up the automatic updates window. Click the custom option. Click next. Uncheck the checkbox of the update you don't want. Now select the option to not notify me about this update again and press ok.

The last step is to delete the update that Windows downloaded on your computer. Open up my computer. Navigate to the following directory, C:/Windows/SoftwareDistribution/Download. Delete all the contents inside the folder but don't delete the download folder. Now empty your recycle bin.

To check if you have Windows XP Service Pack 3 installed do this. Click Start, Right Click on My Computer and click Properties. Under where it says operating system version it should say Service Pack 2 or 3. If you have Service Pack 2 installed then download service pack 3 from here, http://softwarepatch.com/windows/windows-xp-service-pack-3.html. In the link it will explain what Service Pack 3 is but its a essentially a rollup of all the security updates for Windows XP and it adds a few small new features like network access protection to Windows XP as well.

Just post the last 30 or so lines of the WindowsUpdate log here.

I have followed your advice and it seems to have done the trick OK.

    DONE.
By the way, I discovered that I have SP3 installed.
I do not have SQL services, is this advisable?

Thanks! :) You don't need SQL Server and having SP3 installed is good. Your system should be up to date now. If you have any more questions let me know.
