Is there any shortcut to access internet protocol TCP/IP settings for LAN connections in XP ?

I have a strange LAN connection where I have to change the IP address often to keep the connection alive. If I stop the browsing for over a few minutes (like a read webpage !!!), the connection turns inactive till I change the last number in the IP address again. I hate going through multiple clicks to access the IP settings.

You could create a batch file containing the following two lines and run it.

    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

The real question is, why is it necessary to do this
Have you checked for updated drivers for your adapter?

Thanks Dave. The LAN is working fine in another location.

I put those lines into a bat file and ran it. It runs (I get the black dos screen for a moment before it goes away) but does not bring up the TCP/IP settings page. What am I doing wrong ?

You've done nothing wrong, and it will not bring up the TCP/IP properties. It instead releases the current connection (IP) then renews it.

What do you mean by 'working fine in another location'? Is it a laptop? Wireless or wired?

    Dave

It's a Dell Inspiron 1420 XP pro laptop with wired LAN. I have two offices 200 klicks apart. It works perfectly fine in one office but gives this problem in the other.

Even now, when I was typing my earlier reply, the line conked out and I had to change (not renew) the IP address (the last no. like from 10 to 13).

Running that bat file did not change the IP address as you rightly said.

Is there another way to bring up the TCP/IP settings page ?

    Thanks for your help.

I know of no other way to bring up the advanced setting quickly.

Does releasing/renewing not work as expected?

Are these offices in the same building, sharing the same router connection?
Domain? If domain, is the server responsible for DHCP?

No, releasing and renewing the IP address does not work. The IP number has to be changed every time. I toggle between 10 & 13 every time.

The two offices are 125 miles apart. In one office, I connect directly through the LAN modem. In this office with the LAN problem, I connect through a router, where many computers are using the same router. Is that the problem ? But I don't get any IP address conflict message even when the other computers are on-line.

It's important to know if the problem connection is in a domain.
If in a domain, is the domain controller handing out DHCP or is the router? Does the laptop authenticate on the server?

As for switching IPs, it's important to know how the other computers on the network are getting their IP. If statically configured, you need to make sure that no other computer is assigned either of those numbers. If configured for automatic, you need to know if there is a specified address range being used and what device hands out those IP's. It's very possible that there is indeed an ip conflict and you just aren't getting notified about it.

What happens if you configure your connection to use automatic IP and server address?

For the record, a batch could be written that would release the IP, change the setting in the registry (if 10 then change to 13 and if 13 change to 10), then renew the IP. I would much rather see you sort out the problem though. ;)

Well, don't set the IP number statically. Use the setting Obtain an IP address automatically. This will use the DHCP server at each location to obtain an available IP address from the pool of available addresses.

Thanks Arie. Setting IP address automatically does not work at all. I am trying track my IT guy to get to the bottom of this.

OT to site admin - Is there anyway to move the quick reply message box to the bottom of the latest reply (or) move the latest reply to the bottom of the pile just above the quick reply box so that one can see the post one is replying to? Right now, the last reply is at the top of the page and quick reply box is at the bottom of the page necessitating scrolling up & down.

In the mean time, I was able to snag a batch file to change the IP addresses by clicking one button. Sorry Dave, I was trolling (since I am unable to get hold of my IT guy) and caught this fish.

Now I have two batch files to alternate between the two IP addresses. Of course, I do not remember each time what was the working address before it conked out. So, now I am trolling for automatic switching between the two IP addresses from a single batch file.

That's not the default of the software. You must have made the change in your User CP
