Windows Vista [Windows Update fails - error code 0x80073712]

HI! I am new to this forum in hopes of finding out what is going on with my Vista upgrade from XP SP3.

I keep getting the same 7 updates (KB958215, KB960714, KB952069, KB938371, KB952287, KB955302 and KB955839) are available, but they fail to install with the error code 0x80073712.

Here is the last part of the WindowsUpdate.log file that I ran for today. It's pretty big, but here you go. I also ran sfc /scannow and didn't see a windows afterwards stating that there were any errors.

One more thing, when I insert DVDs or USB media I get a message about replsync.dll could not be found. I looked for that file in the
Windows\system32 dir and the file is there.

Yes I am running SP1 on Vista Business. I ran the Vista upgrade again and now all of the updates seems to be downloading and installig, except I am still getting dll errors. Everytime I insert any media (CD, USB thumb drive) I get an error about not being able to find replres.dll. I was getting the same type of error before re-running the Vista installer, but it was referring to replsync.dll.

I did also run sfc /scannow, and it did not find any incorrect files.

 

I want to uninstall SQL SErver, but it doesn't show up in the Programs and Features list. How else would I go about uninstalling it?

 

Well I seem to have fixed the updates by reinstalling Vista, but now I have the SQL Server issues. There is also another issue though. When I click on the link to change my product key in System Properties, it doesn't do anything and it still tells me that I have 25 days to activate this product.

I think I just have to do a clean install, but I have quite a bit of software that I use that I don't have the installers anymore.

 

Evan, how do you go about doing a repair install? If I insert the install DVD while still in Windows, all I get is the regular update install. And when I boot from the install DVD, I can run the Startup Repair but it reports that all is good.

 

Okay, that what I did also but I don't know what caused the product key link to stop working. I also need to figure out how to uninstall SQL Server 2005, since it doesn't show up in the Programs and Features list. I am doing the Upgrade install over again and see what happens.

Of coarse there is always the option of doing a clean install, but that doesn't really fix the problem. It just ensures that the install is complete and hopefully without errors.

 

Yes Add/Remove is now Programs and Features, and SQL is not listed there. I looked for help at the Microsoft web site and they talked about using Microsoft SQL Setup Tools, which is supposed to be on the install CD. I don't even remember where I got the installer, so I don't have the install CD.

If I get bothered by the SQL errors too much, I might just have to go ahead and do a clean install. I will just have to find the installer for the other software I have that I use regularly and backup my data.

I just wanted to report that I finally got my Vista machine going the way it should be with nmo errors on Windows updates and finally rid of MS SQL Server 2005.

I had to manually go into the registry and remove everthing that pointed to MS SQL Server and also manually delete the folders in Program Files.

To get the mcahine to stop the updates errors, I had to run the Vista installer again.

I appreciate all of the suggestions I got from Evan and Arie.
