I want to set a a home network btw windows Xp and Windows ME.

    done already..
both pc are ready w/remote desktop
    workstation names
    PC names

I have optimum online on PC using Windows ME (there is that black box from cablevision)
The XP is able to use the internet using a cable wire ethernet wire I believe (or it looks like one) which is connected to the black cable box.

I am to right click on LAN connectio/properties/tcp/ip/then properties again..not sure what IP address I should use for either PC. I know the sub mask is 255.255.255.0.
what else should I do to get the nipped in the bud?

I know how to find th IP addresses for both PCs..if needed. but, I dont want to lost internet connection because I am entering the wrong IPs etc, etc. help!

Make/Model of "that black box from cablevision" could help ;)

Idealy (for a small/home network) you'd set that black box to issue IP's (DHCP server) and set the computers to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically ".
