I have lost my volume control from the task bar and from my control panel. I have my xp disc but don't know how to extract it from the cd. Can anyone explain. I can't get my new sound card to work or play cd's due to my audio is not in place. These got deleted by mistake when I thought I have some melware issues on my computer. I have a amd amd geforce6100pm-m2 mother board 64 fx/athlon 64 x2 dual-core athlon. This is the only issue.

Does your sound card appear in device manager?

To access Device Manager in XP click Start -> Run and in the Run Box type
    Code:
    devmgmt.msc
Look in (click the +) Sound, video and game controllers and list any drivers shown there.

What model is your sound card?

Ok, assuming that's listed in Device Manager and there's no conflicts listed could you follow the steps here and let me know if that helps

I tried mmsys.cpl and I had no box to assign volume icon in the taskbar. I tried to save a new copy of the sndvol32.exe file from my xp cd to the hard drive and got a error "can't open output file C:\windows\sys32\sndvol32.exe "

    Thanks 69buicknut57

    Ok, try this

Start->Run and in the run box type

    cmd

You should now get a command/dos screen

At the C:\.... prompt type sndvol32.exe and tell me what happens, if you get an error please quote it exactly as it appears.

    EDIT: Just reread your post

You should try to extract the file to "C:\windows\system32\sndvol32.exe

    Try it again.

ok, one step at a time...

Try reinstalling your sound card drivers and try those instructions again.

Once you've done that let me know what happens.

    sound issues with xp

ok wildfire I shutdown and reloaded the software, no sound still, one thing I noted in the c-media wdm auto device properties it says driver is embled but has not been started. I also made sure I disabled bios on board sound before I reinstalled the software.

    No problem,

I've found another solution but it's a little more complicated so probably best to try that one first. Let me know how you get on.

By the way are you dual booting (noticed the F: system drive), if so what other OS's are you running and does the sound card work ok with them?

    Thanks Ann,

Good idea but another solution involved Plug and Pray (oops sorry ;)) Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator. Probably best trying your idea first though.

ok I did a restore point and unstalled the kernal splitter, system audio device, wave audio mixer, winmm wdm audio compatibility driver. Still no sound. i noted that in the device manager list (pfmmodnt)- for non plug and play drivers had a ! so i tried to start it and recieved a error system cannot find the file specified which might explain why most of my kernel drivers are showing code45. How can I get the file restored. pftmodnt. I do have my volume control and other midi back but still no sound. 69buicknut557
