    Hi guys and gals,

A friends iMedia 5057 is running like a snail. Its loaded with XP and 256meg Ram, of which 64 0f that is shared. It's been running great for a couple of years, but recently has slowed to an incredibly slow pace.

Ive been to it today, scanned it and removed a couple of problems, cleaned it and defragged it - its a bit quicker but nowhere near like it was a few months ago - can you point me in any direction other than sticking some more RAM into it ?

    Cheers,

    Jim

    1. Run chkdsk /f on hard disk.
    2. Remove all the junk [use ATFCleaner or CCleaner]
    3. Remove unnecessary startup programs.

rsinfo - chkdsk reports no problems on the HD, i've used CCleaner and that removed a pile of junk off the PC - Neither myself or my friend can define unnecessary start-up programs.

Ive gone back to it this morning and when booted it said isdelete cannot be found and skipping disk check (or similar wording to that)
I've set it up so that it boots from the HD first and this has enabled a much faster boot, was previously set to boot on CD then DVD then Floppy then HD

Web pages are taking a while to load, I cant see anything untowards on it now, i'm no specialist but can navigate my way around a PC (I think)

I'll nip to the boot sale this morning and see if I can pick up some extra RAM for this, can't really be bad for it

    Cheers

XP will crawl with a nett RAM of 192 Mb. 512 Mb is the minimum RAM for XP to work reasonably well - I would put in 1 Gb.
Be aware that not any old RAM will do - it must be compatible. Check out compatible modules at www.crucial.com - use their scanner (on the slow computer) or check manually and note down the specs of the compatible RAM on offer.

I need DDR 266 133mhz - ive had a look there this morning and no-one has what I need. The thing I dont understand is: It was running fine until recently, it came with the 256 installed and was OK.

I'll get some and see what improvements that makes.

    Cheers,
